K: No, not really. M: You didnt? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire.,K: Molly, thats rubbish. You forget that Tony was a machine. Yes, Claire fell in love with Tony, but I dont believe robots could possibly feel emotion of any kind. Thats the difference between them and us.,M: Well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her how he didnt want to leave her the next day and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? K: Yes, but Molly, that was just part of Tonys role. They made him so that he wouldnt allow a human to be hurt.,And Claire was hurting herself by seeing herself in a negative way and Tony couldnt let her do that. So everything Tony did was to make Claire feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion that was just how he was made.,M: OK, well, maybe youre right. I suppose I just want to think he was more human than he was. Anyway, I wonder how they could actually make a robot seem as if he had emotions.,K: I have no idea. Maybe Tony was just a very complicated computer. Anyway, I dont believe it would ever be possible for humans to make a robot like Tony.,M: Well, Kate, you just never know. Actually, Id really like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life was to please you! K: Mmm. Do you know what I really think, Molly? M: What?,K: I think that Tony was really a man pretending to be a robot. M: Oh, Kate! K: Actually, now that I think about it, I guess that was the companys biggest mistake.,M: What? K: That they made the robot look so much like a real man. M: Yes, youre right.,Discuss,Imagine having a robot in their houses to do the housework. Discuss what positive or negative effect the situation would be.,Positive effects,I think it is wonderful for people to have robots in their houses to do the housework. After a days work, when people get home, they can be really relaxed with everything prepared by their robots. A robot never gets tired. Nor does it complain. Life will be very easy and comfortable.,Negative effects,Maybe people can enjoy a very comfortable life with the help of their robots. But at the same time I believe people will lose the ability to do housework. As time goes by, people cannot live well without a robots help. I think that kind of life would be terrible.,Writing,Write a paragraph describing a new type of robot.,A sample of a new type of robot.,Remote Presence Robots,Remote Presence Robots allow a medical expert to visually examine and communicate with a patient from anywhere in the world, via the machine, using wireless technology.,The robot runs on a wireless system with the doctor at another location. The patient sees the doctors image on the robots face.,Although the robot does not physically examine the patient it allows face-to-face contact between the doctor and patient, providing immediate access to specialists. Our robots certainly would never, replace all doctors on ward rounds, but they are a communication tool which allows a doctor to have direct contact with their patient if they are unable to get to them.
