He wonders(想知道): Can I communicate(交际) with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the differences between British and American English? How important are these differences? Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say “in hospital” and “Have you a pen?”, while Americans say “in the hospital” and “Do you have a pen?”. Pronunciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound the “r” in the words like “bird” and “hurt”. Speakers of British English do not sound the “r” in these words. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example, “colour” and “honour” are British, “color” and “honor” are American. Not all classics are too difficult or complicated. So youre not limited to the simplified versions. And the easier books are not all for children. Books in their original versions may send you to the dictionary. And you might not understand everything you read. But reading one from cover to cover will give you a real sense of accomplishment. The key is to find the right books. Lets take a look at these. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) Stepping into an old wardrobe, four English school children find themselves in the magical world of Narnia. On this delightful land, they find friends among the many talking creatures. The children soon discover, however, that Narnia is ruled by the White Witch. Edmund, one of the children, falls under her power. Who can free Narnia? Only Aslan, the great and noble lion. He alone knows the deeper magic. But the children themselves must help fight the battle against the White Witch and those who serve her. The Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway) Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, hasnt caught any fish in more than 80 days. Sailing far out from land, the old man hooks an enormous fish. That begins an agonizing three-day battle. First he struggles against the great fish. Then he must fight off the sharks that circle the little boat and threaten to eat his fish. Exhausted and bleeding, the old man arrives back at shore. But his fish, his beautiful fish . . . Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for this superb story of strength and courage, of victory and regret. A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine Lingle) Megs father, a U.S. government scientist, has been missing for many months. He had been experimenting with time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin will try to rescue him. But first they must outwit the forces of evil they encounter on their journey through time and space. Can they find Megs father before its too late? This novel is more than just a science fiction adventure. Its an exploration of the nature of our universe. The Pearl (John Steinbeck) One day Kino, a poor Mexican pearl diver, finds a magnificent pearl. With it he dreams of buying a better life, new clothes and schooling for his son. Instead, it brings only evil. His wife pleads with him to get rid of it. “No,” says Kino. “I will have my chance. I am a man.” But when he kills a man who is trying to steal the pearl, Kino and his wife must run for their lives. This tale of dreams, justice and the power of greed is told simply and beautifully. The Long Winter (Laura Ingalls Wilder)Its winter, 18801881, on Americas northern prairies. Mr and Mrs Ingalls and their four girls stay near the kitchen stove to keep warm. Heavy snowstorms cut them off even from neighbors. With the trains stopped, no supplies can reach the town. Food and fuel are running out. Day after day the girls must grind wheat for bread and twist hay to burn. At times they nearly lose the battle to keep their spirits up.This story provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of early American settlers.40. More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American” is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their livessuch as in schools, business, and sportsbut they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This “side-by-side” living has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from each other. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.48. According to the passage, people in the USA _.A. share American customs and cultureB. live in a kind of “side-by-side” societyC. keep their own customs and habits firmlyD. make no choice to accept American customs51. Which is the best title for this passage?A. Advantages and DisadvantagesB. Different Customs and HabitsC. Home for the PeopleD. “Side-by-side” Living Style in AmericaELike every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music”. When someone says, “Well, I guess Ill have to face the music,” it does not mean hes planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didnt do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember fathers angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was! The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Looper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on, they often said, “Well, its time to face the music.” And that was exactly what they did facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” come to mean “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.” Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced an inspection by their leaders, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass the inspection? Still the men had to go out and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do? Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.52. How many ways does the phrase “to face the music” come from?A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 453. Whats the meaning of “to face the music?”A. To face something far less pleasant. B. To face the stage.C. To face the back of ones horse. D. To face ones leader.54. Twenty-two years ago, my colleague Gerry and I started Stone Soup, along with a group of fellow university students. Different magazines are designed for different readers. Our magazine is for the kind of writing that exists on the borderland between fiction(小说) and nonfiction. We look for novels based on experiences of life that are so real that one wonders whether the stories are true or not. _ We draw on child artists from all over the world to show their arts in the magazine.
