It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf, or tennis, it may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountaineering? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules, as there are for such game as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind, which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “game”. We would be mistaken in this assumption. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical capacities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his prime by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less wasted effort, and they certainly experience enjoyment.本文主要讲述了有关爬山运动的一些问题。1Mountaineering is a sport which involves _.Ahardship BcoldCphysical risk Dall the above答案:D事实细节题。根据第二段第二句“.to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountaineering”可知,爬山者要遭受寒冷、艰辛,还要冒各种风险。2The main difference between a sport and a game lies in origin of the _.Auniform BactivityCrules Dskills答案:C事实细节题。根据第三段第二、三句“There are no manmade rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. After supper on week days, anytime on weekends and especially any day in school holidays, so many roller skaters flow into a streets, squares, parks and playgrounds. What a beautiful sight! But a long time ago, roller skating was a different story. Before 1750, the idea of skating didnt exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin, whose work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked playing the violin. Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer. One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball. Very pleased and a little excited, he accepted it. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think hard how to make a grand entrance at the party. A strange idea struck him one dayhe would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.He tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Very proud of his invention, he couldnt wait for the special day to come, when he would arrive at the party on wheels while playing the violin. On the night of the party Merlin did as he had planned, rolling into the room playing his violin. Quite astonished, all present cast their eyes over him. Then, unexpectedly, came one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He rolled on and on. Suddenly, he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. Down fell the mirror, breaking to pieces. Nobody forgot Merlins grand entrance for a long time!6Merlin was considered a dreamer because he _.Aalways dreamed while sleepingBinvented the roller skatesCoften gave others surprisesDhad very rich imagination答案:D事实细节题。由第二段倒数第二句“Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams.”可知答案。7Merlin roller skated into the room in order to _.Aarrive at the party on timeBimpress the party guestsCtest his new roller skatesDmake the host satisfied答案:B事实细节题。由第三段倒数第一句“.he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.”可知答案。8The main point the writer tries to make in the last paragraph is _.Athe party guests laughed at MerlinBthe roller skates needed improvingCMerlin succeeded beyond expectationDMerlin got himself into great trouble答案:C推理判断题。在尾段中,作者既写到意料之中的事(Merlin穿着旱冰鞋参加聚会,引起满堂宾客的注意)又提到意料之外的事(他撞落墙上的大镜子),两件事的同时发生使得Merlin获得了意想不到的成功。9The text is mainly about _.Aan unusual partyBthe origin of roller skatingCa funny musicianDthe great joy Merlin brought答案:B主旨大意题。文章主要介绍的是roller skating(轮式滑冰)的起源。故选B。111
