福建沙县2017高考英语一轮阅读理解选练2016高考模拟题(由2014山东卷C改编)Elizabeth Freeman was born about 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the age of six months she was acquired, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slaveholders. She became known as “Mumbet” or “Mum Bett.” For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashleys wife tried to strike Mumbets sister with a spade. Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead. Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet consulted a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick. With his help, Mumbet sued(起诉) for her freedom. While serving the Ashleys, Mumbet had listened to many discussions of the new Massachusetts constitution. If the constitution said that all people were free and equal, then she thought it should apply to her. Eventually, Mumbet won her freedom- the first slave in Massachusetts to do so under the new constitution. Strangely enough, after the trial, the Ashleys asked Mumbet to come back and work for them as a paid employee. She declined and instead went to work for Segdewick. Mumbet died in 1829, but her legacy lived on in her many descendants(后裔). One of her great-grandchildren was W.E.B. immigrants of Chinese descent. In the Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes strength and power. In her book Ms.Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, her daughters,Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to attend a sleepover,be in a school play, watch TV or play computer games. They couldnt choose their own afterclass activities or get any grade less than an AThey had to play piano or violinand no other musical instruments. She writes that if a Chinese child gets a Bwhich she says“would never happen”there would be“a screaming, hairtearing explosion”She describes making her 7yearold daughter play a piano piece perfectlyyelling and not letting her leave the bench even to use the bathroomuntil it was. Many people have criticized Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, objects to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters.Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books about parenting, says Amy Chuas parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life.Stacy DeBroff advised parents not to just repeat the way they were raised.Alison Lo,an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Washingtons Bothell campus said,“I dont think Amy is advocating a best practice of parenting style,or that success and achievements are critical yardsticks(衡量标准)of a good life. But I can imagine how strong her daughters college applications are going to be.For many parents whose dreams are seeing their kids graduating from a competitive university,Amy is sharing with the readers that it is achievable by persistent, dedicated parental guidance,”Lo said in an interview with Julie Muhlstein,a columnist with the USbased Heraldnet.com.“In that sence,a young adults giftedness can be born,or made,”Lo continued.【语篇解读】 耶鲁大学华裔教授Amy Chua的新书虎妈战歌成为美国人热议的话题,她提出的“中国式”严苛教子方法引发了巨大争议。16According to the passage, which is TRUE of Amy Chua?AShe is an easygoing woman.BShe is an assistant professor.CShe is a demanding parent.DShe is a cruel teacher. 由文章第二段“In her book Ms.Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters.” 17Which of the following are Sophia and Louisa allowed to do?APlaying the piano.BPlaying the guitar.CDating with boys.DGetting an A minus. 文章第二段“They had to play piano or violinand no other musical instruments.” A。18Stacy DeBroff advised parents to_.Aseek a better future for their childrenBdevelop their own style of parentingCbe strict with their childrenDfollow Amy Chuas parenting style答案B细节理解题。由文章倒数第三段末尾:“Stacy DeBroff advised parents not to just repeat the way they were raised.” B。19Alison Lo concluded that_.Apersistent,dedicated parental guidance is the best parenting styleBparents should respect childrens personalitiesCa gifted child was born with talentDa teenager can be raised to be talent by strict parenting答案D推理判断题。文章末尾句:“In that sense,a young adults giftedness can be born,or made.”“从这个意义上讲,年轻人的天赋可以是天生的,也可以通过后天严格的教养而激发”,故D项正确。 The European union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animals cloning for food eroduction.while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代)of clones from the United States and elsewhere. The report from the European Commission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat. The Commission said a temporary fiveyear EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade.“Food from cloned animals is safe.In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare”,EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable,Dalli said.“Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products) from third countries allowing the cloning technique,”the report said. “Were not going to regulate for the world,”Dalli added. But animal welfare groups criticized the Commissions decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries.“We do not accept the Commissions position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals,as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,”said Sonja Van Tichelen, director of the Eurogroup for Animals.【语篇解读】欧盟委员会近日宣布,欧盟在今后5年暂停将克隆动物用于食品生产,但是克隆动物通过传统方式繁殖的后代用于食品生产和销售不在禁止之列。 20From the passage we can infer that the ban is_.AjustifiedBwelcomeCcontroversial Dmeaningless答案 C 推理判断题。 justified“合乎情理的”;welcome“受欢迎的”;meaningless“没有意义的”。21Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?AThe ban is permanent.BThe imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned.CAnimal welfare groups support the ban.DThe ban has been put into effect. 22Which of the following is the reason for Commissions decision on the ban according to animal welfare groups?AThe origin of food derived from the offspring of clones is untraceable.BFood from cloned animals is safe.CThe issue is for animal welfare.DThe pressure comes from third countries. D。23What might be the most suitable title for the passage?AThe plans of the European Union.BA temporary fiveyear EU ban.CThe EU proposes a ban on animal cloning for food.DThe danger of food derived from cloned animals. 24The text is most probably a_.Anews report Bbook reviewCnewspaper ad Dsciencefiction story答案 A 文章出处题。
