安徽潜山县 2017 高考英语阅读理解一轮训练(三) (2016 高考训练)阅读下列材料,从每题所给的选项中选出最佳选项。 体裁:说明文 话题:社会现象 词数:390 时间:8 Its midnight in Taiwan. While some people are slowly walking home through the busy streets,or getting ready to hit the club scene, others are on their way to a more unusual placea bookstore. The Eslite store in central Taipei opens 24 hours and has more visitors than most Western bookstores could dream of during their daytime hours. Here, young and old sit sidebyside on small steps or around reading tables, deeply absorbed in literary worlds.Others stand and some sit on the floor, all reading in silence as soft classical music flows out from the speakers. The Eslite Group, which runs the fivestory store, opened its first branch in Taipei in 1989.Today,25 years on,the company runs 42 stores in Taiwan, one in Hong Kong and has powerful plans to expand in mainland China. The chains rise comes at a time when bookstores in the United States and Europe are struggling to survive, with some forced to wind_up due to growing pressure from online competitors like Amazon. In the United Kingdom,a third of all independent bookstores have closed down in the last decade. And the last major book seller in the US.Barnes & Nobleis shutting stores as its management struggles to meet the challenges from its digital competitors.Eslite has hit upon an idea to avoid thismaking the store as much a place for books as it is for design, fashion and home styling, small cafes and restaurants. It reported revenue (收入) of around $425 million in 2013,with books accounting for some 40 percent of sales. The mix of literature and design has made the store a place for bookworms, allowing the company to ignore the challenges of the digital age.“It is our belief that the more digital the society (becomes),the more we treasure the warmth of the interconnection, ”Timothy Wang, the manager, says.“This key idea makes Eslite hardly influenced by the changes of the industry.” Eslites success may seem counterintuitive(反直觉的) especially when it seems most latenight visitors treat it like a library, leaving empty handed after hours of free reading.Eslites Timothy Wang says that the business is successful because it creates “a friendly environment” and treats “books as well as the visitors with great enthusiasm.” 【语篇解读】 文章介绍了为什么台湾图书销售繁荣,因为有很多可以看书的夜店。 1According to the passage,we can know that _ Apeople in Taipei have no time to read in the daytime Bpeople in Taipei enjoy reading in the Eslite store Cthe Eslite Group is a good place to chat with friends Dthe Eslite store attracts many Western readers 答案 B 细节理解题。 2Whats the meaning of the underlined phrase “wind up” in Paragraph 2? American researchers say the disease will affect more than one hundred million people worldwide by the year twenty fifty. That would be four times the current number. Researchers and doctors have been studying Alzheimers patients for a century. Yet the cause and cure for the mental sickness are still unknown. However, some researchers have made important steps towards understanding it. Several early signs of the disease involve memory and thought processes. At first, patients have trouble remembering little things. Later, they have trouble remembering more important things, such as the names of their children. There are also some physical tests that might show who is at risk of developing Alzheimers disease. The tests look for proteins in brain and spinal cord fluid. The proteins appear to be found only in people with the disease. The protein tests correctly identify the presence of the disease in about ninety percent of patients. Now, a much simpler physical test to predict Alzheimers risk has been developed. Researchers found that trouble with the sense of smell can be one of the first signs of Alzheimers. Using this information, they developed a test in which people were asked to identify twelve familiar smells. These smells included cinnamon, black pepper, chocolate, paint thinner, and smoke. The study continued for five years. During this period, the same people were asked to take several tests measuring their memory and thought abilities. Fifty percent of those who could not identify at least four of the smells in the first test had trouble with their memory and thinking in the next five years. Another study has shown a possible way to reduce a persons chances of developing Alzheimers disease in old age. Researchers in Chicago found that people who use their brains more often are less likely to develop Alzheimers disease. Those who read a newspaper, or play chess or word games are about three times less likely to develop the condition. Researchers say they still do not know what causes Alzheimers disease. But they say these findings might help prevent the disease in the future. 6. Whats the main idea of the passage? A. Some early signs of the Alzheimers disease. B. We are sure that when we have plenty of money, we will be happy While having some money does have an impact on our level of happiness, having a lot of money does not. It is reported that Americans whose income goes from $20,000 a year to $50,000 a year are more likely to be happy. But beyond $50,000, happiness does not increase as salaries go up. It is because we are never satisfied. Catherine Sanderson, a psychology professor at Amherst College says, We always think if we just had a little more money, wed be happier. But when we get there, we are not. Daniel Gilbert, a psychology professor at Harvard notes,The more you make, the more you want. The more you have, the less it brings you joy. We incorrectly assume weIl get more pleasure from more, and we dont. The things money can buy dont make you happy either. A lot of research suggests that you wont find the good life buying expensive toys. You finally buy that BMW youve always wanted and it soon loses its appeal. Then, instead of wondering if a new car is what really makes you happy, you decide you just need a different new car. It is an endless cycle. To really be happy, you need to understand what makes you happy in the first place. One secret of happiness is people. Surveys have found that people need people. Those who have five or more close friends are 50% more likely to describe themselves as very happy. Good relationships have a far greater effect on happiness than larger salary. Andrew Oswald, an economist at Englands University of Warwick says, B you are looking for happiness in life, find the right husband or wife rather than trying to double your salary. So invest your time and energy in people. The reward is much bigger in terms of happiness! 31In Paragraph 1 the author intends to tell us the belief that A. we are unhappy because we often lack money B. people can buy what they want if they have enough money C. more money will make ones dreams come true D. happiness will result from more money 32. Buying expensive things will surely bring pleasure D. We get nothing from buying expensive things we want. 33. Why does happiness not increase with pay rises? A. Most of us have a psychological problem. B. People are not content with what they get. C. It is human nature to be unhappy. D. Happiness has nothing to do with money. 34. In order to find happiness we should A. always make new friends B. take no notice of our salaries C. focus on good relationships D. invest our money in our friend 【参考答案】3134、DABC 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。 Slang is a popular, less official and often very current form of language. Slang is often playful, direct and sometimes less respectful than the more official and traditional version of language. So now Im going to lay it on you! To “lay it on” is American slang for “to tell” or “to explain.” Slang can take many forms. For example, slang can be local to one city or area. In Washington, D.C. there is a whole set of slang to describe politics and business in the city. For example, the term POTUS stands for President of the United States. If something is “wack” it is wild and crazy. Different professions often have their own slang as well. For example, medical workers might refer to a complaining patient as a “gomer”. A tough stick is someone whose veins are difficult to find when he or she needs to have blood taken. No matter how well you speak English, there are always new and interesting slang words to discover. There are entire dictionaries for describing slang.
