I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,”I said, “OK,”he said. “Ill give you twenty pounds.” “Its got a slightly broken leg,”I said. “Yes, I saw that, its nothing.”Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I11 buy it.” I said. “What do you mean?” “Youve just sold it to me.” he said. “Yes, I know but Ive changed my mind. Professor Sir John Beddington says the effects of climate change on the weather are already being felt in the UK.“In a sense we have moved from the idea of global warming to the idea of climate change, and that is rather important. Temperatures are increasing and there are more changes in our weather,” he said.Even if effective action is taken now on global warming, he says there will be great climate change over the next 20 to 25 years as a result of past global problems.“We have serious problems in the world - in 12 years there will be another billion people on the planet and we have big issues of food security, water security and energy security, and many people will start to be living in cities,” he said. “These are serious problem; climate change is just going to make it worse.”He said there were some “uncertainties” in the analysis of climate and climate change. “But those uncertainties are completely unimportant in comparison(比较)with a great deal of evidence that shows it is happening in the sort of ways climate models would expect,” he said. “For example, the Arctic is heating up faster than other parts of the world - this is exactly what the climate scientists are predicting.”Sir Johns views were made as Britain experienced freezing cold weather and snow, with thousands of homes across the UK without power. Orders to buy and sell came and went like birds. It was in the stock market, the world of money that Mr.Robert, the stockbroker, worked faster and faster. There was no room in it for the world of human feelings or the world of nature.Near lunchtime, everything quieted down.Mr.Robert stood by his desk with his hands full of letters. Suddenly through the open window came a smell of flowers, like the thin breath of spring.Mr.Robert stood still. This was Miss Angelias smell, her own and only hers. The world of the stock market disappeared. And Miss Angelia was in the next room-only twenty steps away.“Ill do it now,” said Mr.Robert softly. “Ill ask her now.Why didnt I do it long ago?”He ran into her office. She looked up at him with a smile. Her face turned a soft pink.“Miss Angelia,”he said, hurriedly, “I only have a moment to talk.I want to say something important to you,Will you be my wife?I havent had time to show you, but I really do love you.”“Why .what are you talking about?” cried the young lady. She stood up and looked at him strangely. “Dont you understand?” Mr. Robert asked quickly. “I want you to marry me now.”Miss Angelia acted very strangely. At first she seemed surprised. Then she began to cry. But then she smiled through her tears like the sun through rain. She put her arms around his neck. “But dont you remember, darling?” she said .”We were married yesterday evening at 8:00, in the little church around the corner.”30 What can we know from the first paragraph?A. Mr. Robert didnt make much money at all31 In the second paragraph, the smell made Robert _.A. think of a lot of lettersB. work harder and fasterC. enjoy the breath of springD. think of nothing but Miss Angeli32What can be inferred from the end of the story?A. It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that theres always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others arent? To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the readers attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brookss story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brookss attempt to translate his tale into science. 33The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to_.A. show the value of Brookss new bookB. show where science can be appliedC. remind the reader of the importance of scienceD. explain why many writers use science in their works34According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?A. Its clear writing.B. Its convincing points.C. Its strong characters. D. Its strong basis. 35What is the authors general attitude towards the book?A. Cautious. B. Critical.C. Contradictory(矛盾的). D. Supportive.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon.
