Unit 3 Inventors and inventions.阅读理解A space ambassador could be appointed by the United Nations to act as the first point of contact for aliens trying to communicate with Earth.Mazlan Othman, a Malaysian astrophysicist(天体物理学家), is set to be tasked with coordinating(协调) humanitys response if and when extraterrestrials(天外来客) make contact.Aliens who landed on earth and asked: “Take me to your leader” would be directed to Mrs. Othman. She will set out the details of her proposed new role at a Royal Society conference in Buckinghamshire next week. The 58-year-old is expected to tell delegates that the proposal has been prompted by the recent discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other stars, which is thought to make the discovery of extraterrestrial life more probable than ever before.Mrs. Othman is currently head of the UNs little known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa). In a recent talk to fellow scientists, she said: “The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several institutes, sustains the hope that some day human-kind will receive signals from extraterrestrials.”“When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.”Opinion is divided about how future extraterrestrial visitors should be greeted. Under the Outer Space Treaty on 1967, which Unoosa oversees, UN members agreed to protect Earth against contamination(污染) by alien species by “sterilizing” them.Mrs. Othman is understood to support a more tolerant approach. But Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that alien interlopers(闯入者) should be treated with caution. He said: “I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. The outcome for us would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didnt turn out very well for the Native Americans.”1.The United Nations appointed Mazlan Othman as a space ambassador_.A.to talk to fellow scientists receiving signals from extraterrestrialsB.to protect the earth against pollution by alien speciesC.to make contact with aliens trying to communicate with the earthD.to settle UN members argument about signals from extraterrestrials2.The leader whom aliens ask to be taken to will be_.A.Stephen Hawking, a British professorB.Mazlan Othman, head of the Royal SocietyC.BanKiMoon, the general secretary of the UND.Mrs.Othman, head of the UNs Office for Outer Space Affairs3.The underlined words in the ninth paragrath coule best be repalaced by ( )A. making them unable to produce childrenB.keeping them out of touch with the earhC. stopping them away from outer spaceD. makind them unable to explore space 4.What Stephen Hawking said suggests that_.A.alien invaders(侵略者) should be attacked fiercelyB.we should greet Future extraterrestrial visitors warmlyC.alien invaders will help humans on earth explore resourcesD.we should take care to treat alien interlopersWhat do you do when you need to look something up? Go to the library? Open an encyclopedia(百科全书)? Click onto the Internet? These days, most people go straight to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. But how reliable is it?There is no denying the popularity and usefulness of Wikipedia. It attracts as many as 78 million visitors every month, and the site is available in more than 270 different languages. Its one of the most comprehensive resources available, which includes almost all details, facts and information that maybe concerned. Its got much more information than an ordinary encyclopedia. The site is updated on a daily basis by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with an Internet connection can log on and edit the contents or add a new page. And you dont need any formal training.Of course, there are some controls. Wikipedia has a team of more than 1,500 administrators who check for false information. And main targets for harmful comments(such as politicians) are off-limits to public editing. But with more than 16 million articles to keep an eye on, it isnt easy. So, while Wikipedia benefits from being constantly updated with information from all over the world, its also open to “vandals”(破坏他人财产者).Some of the damage is easy to notice. One person drew devil horns and a moustache on Microsoft chairman Bill Gates photo, while another edited Greek philosopher Platos biography to say he was a “Hawaiian weather man who is wildly believed to have been a student of Barney the purple Dinosaur and to have been deeply influenced by his dog, Cutie”.But other things are harder to spot. The most common form of vandalism involves adding tiny items of false information into the biography of a famous person. Unbelievably, some of this misinformation has appeared in newspapers, with The Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Independent all having fallen victim to the dirty tricks. For example, in an article about British comedian Sir Norman Wisdom, one newspaper claimed that he co-wrote Dame Vera Lynns wartime hit Therell be bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover. He did no such thing. And in another article, it was reported that TV theme tune composer Ronnie Hazlehurst had written the S Club 7 hit Reach. Once again, not true. So, if youre going to use any information from Wikipedia, make sure you double-check it first.5.Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?A.Before using the information from Wikipedia, one should first check it.B.Though popular and widely used, Wikipedia provides little reliable information.C.It is understandable that some people add false information to Wikipedia.D.Updated on a daily basis, any information from Wikipedia is reliable.6.We can learn from the passage that .A.because of its popularity, 78 million people from 270 countries visit Wikipedia monthlyB.Wikipedia is the most comprehensive resource with all information we needC.anyone who has access to the Internet can edit any contents of Wikipedia as they likeD.the primary job of the administrators is to make sure true information is conveyed7.What does the underlined part “off-limits” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Not convenient .B.Not welcome.C.Not accessible. D.Not boundless.8.Whats the writers attitude to Wikipedia?A.Negative. B.Worried.C.Indifferent. D.Objective.语法填空A century ago, there were a hundred thousand tigers in the wild.
