Unit 1 Women of achievement .阅读理解When I was six, my mother placed me in a boarding home. For the next nine years, I never slept in a room that contained less than 30 other kids in it. So, when I was promoted to senior at the homes high school for my final year there, I had the greatest pleasure of rooming with just one other classmate, and the added feature of a semi-private bathroom. We seniors also had the privilege of walking around the campus in special hats, we called senior bonnets, so all the other kids would know we were the highest in the high school. As seniors, we frequently went on field trips outside the campus, including city museums, city hall, courts, colleges, sports events and theaters. The highlight was a senior class trip to Washington, D.C., where we sat in on a session of Congress, visited the Smithsonian and visited many other government sites around the city.Another benefit of being seniors was that many of us on athletic and other extra-curricular teams were elected to high rankings for the year. I had the honor and pleasure of being chose captain of our state championship swim team, while my roommate was voted president of the dramatic club.Graduation services were on a sunny day in June. Each of us had looked forward to this moment for ten years, from first grade through our senior year. Now we were going out on our own to complete freedom, and we should have been flooded with joy. However, to my surprise, I found myself crying, something I hadnt done for years. I noticed many of my classmates, also usually proud of their macho guy (大男子气概) attitudes, were also wiping away tears. We knew we would never be together again as we were on that graduation day. Our senior year ended with deep feelings of sadness for our loss, as well as joy for our emerging into a new world beyond the school campus.1.What made the author feel most pleasant after becoming a senior for his final year?AHe neednt study in a boarding home from then on.BThere would be at least 30 classmates in his class.CHe would share a room with only one classmate.DHis best friend would share a room with him.2.Why did the author and his classmates wear senior bonnets at campus?AThey could prove that they were from rich families.BThey would be respected by the girls in his class.CThey would look fashionable and attractive.DStudents of the lower grades would know their grades.3.The word “highlight” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by.Atall lamp Bthe best partCmain topic Dbenefit and advantage4.The author and his classmates cant help crying at graduation services as_.Asome of them failed to pass the testBhe would say goodbye to his school and he would face new challengesCthey were not admitted to their dream universitiesDthe headmaster gave a moving speech at the meetingFilmmaker Jeffrey Kimball has a personal tie to the Kimball Art Center. His late father, Bill Kimball, was the one that turned a garage into a three-gallery center that also offers classes and monthly Art Talks. This month, the filmmaker is the featured speaker who will give a free Art Talk on Thursday, June 6. Kimballs topic will be birding in Central Park, which is the focus of his new documentary, Birders: The Central Park Effect.Kimball said he doesnt have time to screen the whole film in Park City, but has selected five clips that he will show. “I will talk a little bit about the birding community in New York City and the fact that there are thousands of birds that come and rest in Central Park,” Kimball said during an interview from New York City. “I will also take questions from the audience.”Kimball had the idea of making a birding documentary that takes place in the Big Apple about four years ago. “The real origin of the project came from seeing the reactions of people faces when I told them that I saw 60 different species of birds in Central Park,” Kimball said with a smile. “They would look at me and say, Are you crazy? Central Park only has pigeons .And I would tell them at a certain time of year in May, it was a stopping place for migrating birds.” He felt if he made a documentary, it would be equal to “revealing a magic world right underneath peoples noses”. Kimball gained access to his subjects through the birding community. It goes back 40 to 50 years, and he was a relative newcomer, but the people were excited to talk about their hobby. Also, the people who are birders in New York City, arent what most people think birders are. “One of the stereotypes of birders is that they are only middle-aged and white,” Kimball said. New York City is not like that. Its a multi-cultured place, and the film nicely reflects that as well, when it comes to the birding community. “There were quite a lot of characters to choose from, and I left a lot of them on the editing floor,” he said. “But I did want to show the different types of people of all ages who are in the community.”5.In Kimballs coming Art Talk, the audience can .A.witness the birders growthB.enjoy all his documentaryC.raise questions on the spotD.identify local bird species6.What inspired Kimball to produce a documentary about birding?A.Pigeons in Central Park.B.Doubts from New Yorkers.C.Questions from the audience.D.60 different species of birds.7.The underlined word “stereotype” may have the closest meaning to “ ”.A. consequenceB. impressionC. prejudiceD. structure8. Some demand you use a specific number of symbols and digits, while others require you to change your password every 60 days. The feeling of confusion resulting from memorizing these login information has grown so common that it actually has a name: password fatigue(疲劳). Having to remember so many different passwords is annoying, but it can also be dangerous. Because it is virtually impossible to remember a unique password for each of these accounts, many people leave handwritten lists of usernames and passwords on or next to their computers. 9 While these practices make it easier to remember login information, they also make it easier for thieves to hack into accounts. Single Sign-On (SSO) confirmation and password management software can help solve this problem. With SSO, users only need to remember one password to log in to the main system.10 SSO software is typically used by large companies, schools, or libraries. 11 If a user loses or forgets the password required to log in to SSO software, the user will then lose access to all of the applications linked to the SSO account. Users who rely on password management software face the same problems. Although most websites or network systems allow users to recover or change lost passwords by providing email addresses or answering a prompt(提示), this process can waste time and cause further frustration. What is more, recovering a forgotten password is only a temporary solution.12Some computer scientists have suggested computers rely on biometrics(生物测定学). 13 The use of biometrics raises questions concerning privacy and can also be expensive to practice. Software engineers and computer security experts are still searching for the cure to password fatigue. Until they find the perfect solution, however, everyone will simply have to rely on the password system currently in place. A.It does not address the larger problem of password fatigue.B.These software programs have been built into many major web browsers C.The problem with password management software makes users feel powerless. D.The SSO software then automatically logs the user in to other accounts within the system.E.However, SSO confirmation and password management software also have drawbacks.F.This is a method of recognizing human users based on unique traits, such as fingerprints, voice, or DNA. G.Others solve this problem by using the same password for every account or using extremely simple passwords.短文改错Dear teachers and schoolmates, Its great honor for me to be here today and share my experience of learning English with you.
