Scientists need to test the data more. Researchers say the real temperature could be one degree colder. The coldest temperature found before this was minus 89.2 degrees Celsius, also in Antarctica. Scientist Dr.Ted Scambos said it was hard to imagine such cold weather. Antarctica is 50 degrees colder than Siberia. The moon was once minus 238 degrees Celsius. The temperatures of the satellites measured wont be in the Guinness Book of Records. Scientists must use a thermometer and take the temperature a few centimeters above the ice. The temperatures of the satellites were a few centimetres above the ice. Dr.Scambos said he was sure that the satellites temperatures are accurate. He also said it was too cold for a thermometer to work. He said it was so cold that people couldnt breathe the air. When scientists go outside, they must wear a special mask that goes inside their coat. They breathe the warm air close to their skin. AThe Coral Sea is home to an amazing variety of turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, large fish, birds, corals, plants, and many other species. Many of these species are endangered elsewhere in the world, but still survive in the healthy environment of the Coral Sea.The Coral Sea is a large series of coral reefs located off the northeast coast of Australia. This area is three times larger than Australias famous Great Barrier Reef, which the Coral Sea borders. The Coral Sea is one of the few coral reef environments that have remained largely undamaged by overfishing, oil and gas exploration and pollution. However, statistics show that coral reefs around the world are disappearing five times faster than rainforests. It is very likely that in the near future the Coral Sea will face the same threats to its existence. The Australian government is currently looking at options for protecting the Coral Sea but has made no decisions. Environmentalists are pushing for laws to declare the Coral Sea area a marine protected area. This world mean a large “notake zone” for fishermen, a noexploration zone for gas and oil companies and a nodump zone for pollution. This would make the Coral Sea a marine park larger than any in the world. We can write letters to Australian leaders, Australian environmental protection agencies, and Australian friends, to let them know that people worldwide support this protection of the Coral Sea. To lose this last great marine wildness world would be a loss for the whole world. For more information, CLICK Here please. 21What is the authors purpose in writing this passage? Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue(waiting your turn) with the morals of the market(paying a price for faster service)Markets and queuespaying and waitingare two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue, “First come, first served,” have an egalitarian(平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets. The principle seems right on playgrounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale, I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because its the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed by different standards.Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank:“Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received.” This is essential for the morals of the queue. Its as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness. But dont take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some peoples calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to “score” incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping.Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we distribute by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other nonmarket ways of allocating goods is so common in modem life that we scarcely notice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queuejumping schemes weve consideredat airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors offices, and national parksare recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered. 25According to the author, which of the following seems governed by the principle “First come, first served”?ATaking buses.BBuying houses.CFlying with an airline.DVisiting amusement parks.【解析】A细节理解题。 26The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates _.Athe necessity of patience in queuingBthe advantage of modern technologyCthe uncertainty of allocation principleDthe fairness of telephonic services【解析】C推理判断题。 27The passage is meant to _.Ajustify paying for faster servicesBdiscuss the morals of allocating thingsCanalyze the reason for standing in lineDcriticize the behavior of queue jumping【解析】B写作意图题。 CTwo new studies suggest that modem running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixtyeight healthy young women and men who ran at least twentyfour kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine(跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot(赤脚)Researchers from the JKM Technologies Company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running.Runners who wear shoes usually come down their heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel.Harvards Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heel. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website. 28Whats the main idea of the passage?AWalking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot.BTwo new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels.CRunning in shoes is partly good to runners.DTwo new studies prove running without shoes is less risky to runners in most cases.【解析】D主旨大意题。 29Which part of our body could be injured if we run in running shoes?AToes.BHips.
