The force of water expanding is so great that it will break the hardest metal. Water is used in car engines to keep them cool while they run, and if this water is allowed to freeze in winter it can break the iron block of the engine. That is why antifreezes are necessary.Water freezes at the 0: the usual kind of antifreeze will not freeze until the temperature is 40 below zero. A mixture of 5 parts of water and 4 parts of antifreeze will prevent freezing at 18 below zero; 4 parts of water and 5 parts of antifreeze reduce this to 22 below zero.Alcohol(酒精)is a good antifreeze, but when the car is running it becomes hot and the alcohol boils away, so it must be replaced very often. Most people use antifreezes that do not boil away when the engine is running. There are several chemicals that do this. One of the most popular is called ethylene glycol(乙二醇), which is sold under various trade names such as Preston and Zerex.59. Antifreezes are useful in that they _.A. keep the alcohol from boiling away B. can prevent ice from meltingC. keep water liquid in cold weather D. can raise the freezing point of water60. The text is written _.A. to help to sell antifreezesB. to explain what antifreezes areC. to compare ethylene glycol with alcoholD. to tell how to choose the best antifreeze61. Preston and Zerex are _.A. trade names of two kinds of alcoholB. popular brands(商标)of car enginesC. inventors of ethylene glycol D. liquids used for car engines C Going to school means learning new skills and facts in different subjects. Teachers teach and students learn, and many scientists are interested in finding ways to improve both teaching and learning processes. Sian Beilock and Susan Leving, two psychologists at the University of Chicago, are trying to learn about learning. In a new study about the way kids learn math in primary school, Beilock and Levine found a surprising relationship between what female teachers think and what female students learn: If a female teacher is uncomfortable with her own math skills, then her female students are more likely to believe that boys are better than girls at math. “If these girls keep getting math-anxious female teachers in later grades, it may create a snowball effect on their math achievement,” Levine told Science News. The study suggests that if these girls grow up believing that boys are better at math than girls are, then these girls may not do as well as they would have if they were more confident. Just as students find certain subjects to be difficult, teachers can find certain subjects to be difficult to learnand teach. The subject of math can be particularly difficult for everyone. The new study involved 65 girls, 52 boys and 17 first-and second-grade teachers in primary schools in the Midwest. The students took math achievement tests at the beginning and end of the school year, and the researchers compared the scores. The researchers also gave the students tests to tell whether the students believed a math superstar had to be a boy. Then the researchers turned to the teachers: To find out which teachers were anxious about math, the researchers asked the teachers how they felt at times when they came across math, such as when reading a sales receipt(收据). A teacher who got nervous looking at the numbers on a sales receipt, for example, was probably anxious about math. Boys, on average, were unaffected by a teachers anxiety. On average, girls with math-anxious teachers scored lower on the end-of-the-year math tests than other girls in the study did. Plus, on the test showing whether someone thought a math superstar had to be a boy, 20 girls showed feeling that boys would be better at mathand all of these girls had been taught by female teachers with math anxiety. According to surveys done before this one, college students who want to become primary school teachers have the highest levels of anxiety about math. Plus, nine of every 10 primary teachers are women, Levine said.62. Sian Beilock and Susan Levine carried out the new study in order to _. A. know the effects of teaching on learning B. study students ways of learning mathC. prove women teachers were unfit to teach math D. find better teaching methods for teachers63. The underlined part in paragraph 2 most probably means that girls may _.A. end up math learning anxiety from their teachers B. study the ways their female teachers behaveC. have an influence on their math-anxious female teachersD. gain unexpected achievements in such subjects as math64. What is the finding of the new study?A. No male students were affected by their teachers anxiety. B. Almost all the girls got lower scores in the tests than the boys.C. About 30% of the girls thought boys were better at math than girls D. Girls with math-anxious teachers all failed in the math tests.65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. 117 students and teachers took part in the new study. B. The researchers felt surprised at the findings of their study. C. Beilock and Levine were interested in teaching math. D. Male teachers were better at teaching math than women teachers.DAs I was busy working on my work plan in my bedroom, I could hear my four children playing upstairs. Suddenly, I heard the children running down the stairs and shouting, “Freddie, Freddie.” I heard the word “window” and rushed outside, heart in mouth. My three-year old son Freddie was lying on his side on the ground. I cried for my husband Simon to dial 999 and within minutes the air ambulance arrived. They quickly took him in the helicopter. During the flight, Freddie was looking at me and I remember thinking was a good sign, but then his eyes began to roll. As the doctors tried to stabilize(稳定) him, I couldnt believe what was happening. When we arrived at the hospital in Portsmouth, there were some doctors and nurses waiting for us and they immediately set to work on Freddie. I was hopelessly wishing everything would be alright, but Freddie had broken his skull in two places and blood clots were forming in his brain. He needed surgery(外科手术), and only a surgeon at another hospital in Bristol could do it. This meant another helicopter ride, but we couldnt go with Freddie because there was no enough space. Simon and I drove the long 130 miles from our home in north Devon in silence. Neither of us dared say what we were thinking, “What if we get there and hes dead?” “Is he going to be brain-damaged?”Freddie was just coming out of surgery when we arrived. The surgeon said it had gone well. When I finally saw him, I hardly recognize my childhe was covered in tubes and there were wires coming out of his head. On the third day, Simon went home to see our three girls and to pick up some clean clothes for us. While he was gone, the pressure in Freddies brain suddenly increased. He was taken into theater again and this time I fell apart. Luckily, the surgery managed to stabilize Freddie. After almost a week, Freddie was finally woken up. When he opened his eyes, he looked at me. He didnt say anything, but I knew straight away that it was my old Freddie, and that he was going to be alright. Over the next two weeks, his recovery went well. After help with learning to swallow again and encouragement with speaking, he was soon playing with his Gruffalo cards and eating meals by himself. I still dont know how the accident happened, but we got some idea from our girls. Clearly Freddie and Minnie had been sitting on the window ledge, and Freddie must have opened it to look out and fallen 20 feet onto the ground below. The guilt I feel is awful for weeks I was full of “ if onlys”, and we put window locks everywhere. Six months later, although the accident seems a lifetime ago, it has changed me. I feel differently about life now. Ive left my job to put my children first. I want to spend every minute with them.66. The underlined sentence in paragraph 1 shows the author was _. A. hopeless B. worried C. curious D. puzzled67. Why did the authors son have to be moved to another hospital in Bristol? A. Because no surgeons were on duty in the first hospital that day. B. Because the author wanted his son to stay in a hospital nearer her home. C. Because no surgeons in the first hospital knew the injuries to the authors son. D. Because no surgeons in the first hospital could do sur
