Instead, they receive their elementary(初等的) and high school education by working at home on computers. The center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public cyberschools and that is about twice as many as two years ago.The money for students to attend a cyberschool comes from the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer, a printer, books and technical services. Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.Students at cyberschools usually do not know one another. But 56 such students finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.16. What do we know from the text about students of a cyberschool?A. They have to take long bus rides to school.B. They study at home rather than in classrooms.C. They receive money from traditional public schools.D. They do well in traditional school programs. 17. What is a problem with cyberschools?A. Their equipment costs a lot of money.B. They get little support from the state government.C. The students find it hard to make friends.D. It is hard to know students progress in learning. 18. Cyberschools are getting popular because _. A. they are less expensive for studentsB. their graduates are more successful in societyC. their students can work at their own speed D. they serve students in a wider age rangeBWhen the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds. Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.Three days later, a hurricane(飓风) hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country. For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog back.A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting hopelessly on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy. The dog had been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)at first but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added. It was, as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.19. The dog Jody fell down the cliff when she was _. A. rescuing her owner B. caught in a hurricaneC. blocked by a rock D. running after a sheep20. Who spotted Judy after the accident?A. A student from Leeds B. A birdwatcherC. Six volunteers D. The coastguard of Cornwall21. What can we infer from the text?A. People like to travel with their pets.B. Judy was taken to the fields for hunting.C. Holden cared little where Judy was buried.D. Luck plays animportant role in Judys survival.22. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Miracle of the Coastguard. B. Coming Back from the Dead.C. Dangers in the Wild D. Surviving a Hurricane. C Americans with small families own a small car or a large one. If both parents are working, they usually have two cars. When the family is large, one of the cars is sold and they will buy a van (住房汽车). A small car can hold (容纳) four persons and a large car can hold six persons but it is very crowded(拥挤). A van hold seven persons easily, so a family with three children could ask their grandparents to go on a holiday travel. They could all travel together. Mr. Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell a second car and bought a van. The sixth and seventh seat are used to put other things, for a family of five must carry many suitcases(衣箱) when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents home, the suitcases are brought into the home and the two seats can then carry the grandparents. Americans call vans motor homes. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family are traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. All the members of a big family can enjoy a happier life when they are traveling together. That is why motor homes have become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.23. Before Mr. Hagen and his wife bought a van, they_.A. sold their old house B. moved to their grandparents houseC. built a new place for a van D. sold their second car24. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:1.Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when Im already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 272.Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 28 it takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.3. 29 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.Hopefully that gives you a good start. 30 and dont let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!A. Try new things. B. Ability is easily improved.C. Make three or four instead.D. Understand your food better.E. Cooking is a burden (负担) for many people.F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on. The young woman entered the pool where an injured dolphin(海豚) was swimmingDespite her fear, she felt strong wearing her new legIn her second gradeMaja 31 her cousin,JasminaAfter Jasminas deathMaja swore she would honor the little girl by 32 with a dolphin, an animal that both girls 33 .” Jasmina never got the chance to do it.” says Maja, now, “so I 34 that someday Id do it for her”In high school, Maja was 35 about sportsShe even planned to become an athlete 36 , in 1993, during the civil war in her home country, a bomb(炸弹) 37 her left legAfter two years 38 in the U.S., Maja received her first artificial leg, but 39 it didnt fit well, walking for Maja was very painful. 40 , she managed to graduate from a local high schoolThen after receiving a 41 from Saint Francis University, she got a job at an insurance firm and 42started her own company To relax, Maja 43 often watch the dolphins play at an aquarium(水族馆)near her homeA young dolphin, Winter, who had lost its tail, caught her 44 .
