However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, Its a little damp (潮湿的) outside. Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, She isnt exactly friendly. Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidently falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. Whats more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesnt talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.(1)Is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?(2)What does understatement mean?(3)What do the British love to watch comedies about?(4)How does Mr Bean make people laugh?(5)What are the key points for people to understand British humour?11. (8分)阅读理解What will man be like in the future in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on the average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively (相对地) short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller.Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brains capacity (容量.) As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too. The head, especially the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are being used too much. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that mans eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend (有的趋势) to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive (敏感的) because they are used a great deal in modern life. What about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women are probably to be hairless!Perhaps, all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive (有吸引力的) person to look at! This may well be true. All the same, besides these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.(1)Future man is probably to be different from us in _ ways. A . twoB . threeC . fourD . five(2)Future mans head will grow larger because _. A . he will use his brain more and more as time goes onB . he makes use only 80% of the brains capacityC . the other 80% of his brain will grow fasterD . his brain has grown larger over the past centuries(3)What will be probably TRUE about the man in the future? A . He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.B . His fingers will grow weaker because he wont use them.C . He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.D . He will think and feel in a different way.(4)What does the writer write the article for? A . To give us some knowledge of future man.B . To show that mans life will be different in the future.C . To let us know future man will become shorter.D . To tell us future man will not use legs.12. (5分)下面文章中有5处需要添加小标题,请从选项A-F中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。A.Be patient when talking to others.B.Show respect(尊重) towards others.C.Do not lose your temple.D.Speak in a proper voice.E.Be polite to others.F.Do not correct the person.A gentleman is a man who is polite and well-educated, and who always behaves well. Gentlemanly manners are one of the best ways to show the excellent qualities(品质) in humans, so it is necessary for everyone to learn how to become a gentleman. Here are some tips._You should behave politely no matter how impolite other people are. Even if you do not like the person, it is always better to avoid him or her instead of stopping for any fight. Remember that politeness will show you to be a better man._Never be too loud or just hearable, as it can make other people angry, Speaking loudly will show that you are using force rather than argument to make a point. Also, speaking loudly in public is impolite._Only when you learn to control your temple will you be in control of other things. When you show anger, others will think you are neither patient nor polite. Keep your cool no matter how stressful the situation becomes. It is bad manners to express your ideas when someone is speaking. And it will show that you have no social skills._The more you respect others, the more respect you will get in return.
