Friends always ask why I, a middle-aged woman with no athletic talent, go to such places. I never know how to answerJust I want to put my toes in the mud of adventure. I stopped traveling nine years ago after I suffered a stroke(中风)caused by a disease, APS. To prevent another stroke, my doctors told me that traveling to remote places without medical help would be risky. A slip on a damp temple step, even a slight traffic accident, would no longer be mere annoyances. My return to travel after my stroke came in baby steps a feast in Texas; a visit to my mom in Virginia. They all came back, the freedom, the excitement and the fresh air. The first real test of my travel courage came nine months after my stroke when I joined my husband in visiting China. After we had toured a temple, Jack wanted to ride down on a toboggan (平底长雪橇). Before the stroke it would have seemed like fun for me. But now I stepped back. I feared. My mind screamed warnings of a fall or a crash. Then gathering confidence from nowhere, I lowered myself and took the flying toboggan ride, which marked my adventure travels coming back. Since then, Ive dared to take challenges and have challenged many places. But I watch my medicine like an eagle. I get my blood tested. I weigh the risks. Then, if I decide its okay, like that toboggan ride down the mountain, I just jump in, let go and enjoy the ride. I think I travel for hoping to broaden my world and keep me connected with friends and families. Most of all, saying “yes to travel is related to my APS. They were free to invent games of their own. Nowadays, however, we control the lives of our children much more, giving them fewer chances for free play. Many children in England used to spend hours playing on their bikes, having all sorts of adventures, but this is now considered too dangerous. Some working families cant care for their children after school, so the children have to stay indoors or attend supervised after-school activities. The result is that some children have little time for play any more and when they do its often spent in front of the television or computer. In the past, children in Brazil played a game which involves spinning (旋转) a large seed with a hole in it to create a scream-like noise. They rarely play this game nowadays. Studies show that outdoor environments help all people by reducing stress and creating a general feeling of well-being. When children play in the open air, they are more likely to have positive feelings about each other. Outdoor environments are also important for childrens development of independence. When playing outside, children can gradually increase the distance from adults. Adults are then more willing to trust their children, an important element in confidence-building which improves the relationship between child and parents. Outdoors, children have more chances to use all their senses. They have greater freedom not only to run and shout, but also to interact with the environment. Activities which may not be allowed indoors are perfectly acceptable outdoors; children are free to play messy games out in the open air that just wouldnt be permitted in the home. Children experience the natural environment differently from adults. Adults typically see nature as background to what they are doing, while for children it is a hands-on experience. The expensive toys and indoor educational games cannot substitute for the experience of direct interaction with nature. They cannot replace the sensation where a childs attention is suddenly caught by the sunlight through leaves or the gentle noise of water flowing by. 【文章大意】文章主要介绍现在的孩子几乎没有时机进行户外活动以及户外活动对孩子的好处。28. In a video, blogger Jimmy Bright argues that the Richat Structure, a geologic dome(穹状物)in northwest Sahara also referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, is the most likely location of Atlantis. He mentioned measurements from the famous Dialogues of Plato, which gave birth to the mystery. The Greek philosopher(哲学家)claimed that Atlantis was a long-gone kingdom, which stretched into Europe as far as Italy and into Africa as far as Egypt thousands of years ago. The giant island was said to be wiped off the face of the planet by a natural disaster“in a single day and night of misfortune. At first sight, this has nothing to do with the land-based Richat Structure, but Jimmy claims that the so-called Younger Dryas theory could be a possible explanation. According to it, a massive change in global temperatures caused unexpected climate change and sea level to rise. In what can be viewed as another proof to the Sahara theory, the diameter(直径)of the Richat Structures outer circle is 23. 5 km according to Google Maps measurements, which matches those mentioned by Plato 127 stadia, which is roughly 23. 5 km in todays terms. Another thing that helps solve the mystery is a theory that the Eye of the Sahara closely matches the description from Platos dialogues. The ancient philosopher wrote that the main city of Atlantis consisted of circles of water and land, which, Jimmy said, looks very similar to the circular form of the Richat Structure. Although the majority of researchers believe that Platos story was nothing but a moral story used to describe a failed idea of seeking power and searching for fortune, it has raised quite a few theories. Since the Middle Ages, explorers have been pointing fingers at different places around the world, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with the most amazing theories linking the location of Atlantis t
