Hansen teaches the kids how to punch (拳打), kick, and block along with the values of the Korean martial arts. He says that they also learn confidence and how to improve their motor skills. “Theyve learned focus, just to be able to pick one item and pay attention to it.” “Tae Kwon Do is pretty fun,” says Christina Hinkle. She was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) and says she never wants to miss class. “Well, how come? Its pretty fun.” “Ever since she saw Karate Kid, shes been running around the house, doing kicks and punches,” says Peggy Hinkle, Christinas mother. Peggy says that her daughter processes information slowly and taking Tae Kwon Do lessons has helped her in all parts of her life. “It gives her a chance to be a regular kid.” Wednesdays class is not a normal class. Instead, its a day that all the students have been waiting for. “Today is actually the first day, and Im actually going to be able to test these guys,” says Hansen. The students would receive their White Belts. However, in order to receive their belts, the students must show off their skills in front of a group of Black Belts. “Nervous? No way. Im so excited,” says Christina just before she displayed what she has learned over the past few months. She and the other students also answered questions about the history of Tae Kwon Do, as well as its philosophy (哲学). “To me, its just really important for them to actively see that they are learning something,” says Hansen. “That they actually are able to be rewarded for everything that theyve done in this class.” All the students passed. They received their White Belts. “To see the joy in her face was very rewarding,” says Peggy. She videotaped the whole test and hugged her daughter telling her that shes proud. “Christina feels like she could do anything,” she says.Christina says that her next goal is to keep working on her skills so she can move up to a Gold Belt. B One of Indias top engineering schools has restricted Internet access in its boarding houses, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students performance, making them lonely and even suicidal. Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them. Now, a student doesnt even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet, said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs. The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion. IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional (不正常的) lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming. Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12.30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbais 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their shells, Gopalan said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (摇篮曲) to go to sleep, said Rajiv, an electronics student.50. Which of the following is not the possible effect of free Internet access on students?A. DA bowl of soup a day could keep the pounds at bay. Health experts have discovered that adding low-calorie vegetable soup to the start of a meal can actually help to lose weight. Because you tend to feel full sooner, you eat less of your main course. The soup method was tested by researchers at Pennsylvania State University, led by Dr Barbara Rolls. They found that when participants in the study ate a first course of soup before lunch they reduced their total calorie intake by 20 per cent, compared with those who did not begin the meal with soup. But those who favour creamy soups should beware. Researchers stressed the soup must be low-calorie and based on stock, not cream. All of the soups tested in the study were made from the same elementschicken stock (原汁鸡汤), broccoli (菜花), potato, cauliflower (花椰菜) and carrots. They were mixed together to create four different textures and thickness from separate stock and vegetables through to pureed (蔬菜泥) soup. Scientists thought that thick soups with thick pieces of vegetables which required chewing might be more filling, but to their surprise they found all forms had the same effect. The findings were presented to the Experimental Biology conference in Washington, DC, and the research was part funded by the National Institutes of Health. 58. The passage mainly discusses _.A. how to lose weight in a simple way B. what kind of soup to be served at a mealC. how to form a healthy eating habit D. why eating soup could help lose weight59. EI was born and raised in the shadow of the Capitol(美国国会大厦), in Washington, D.C., as were my parents and my mothers parents. Our row house was on a tree-lined street just blocks from the building that was the heart of the federal legislative branch. When I was a child, in the 1940s, friends and I would pack a lunch or ride a streetcar to the Capitol. If we roller-skated, we hid the skates in the bushes in the park across the street before entering the building.I knew every corner of the Capitol. Wed play hide-and-seek and pretend we saw ghosts in the halls and stairways. I dont know how we got away with it. I remember the beautiful ladies rooms, with their marble floors and sinks. I pretended that I was a fine lady in them.In those days, you could walk around the Capitol dome(圆顶屋), which was a little scary for me. I loved the wonderful paintings and statues and the subway rides to the Senate Office Building. It was like an amusement ride. I even used to sit in the gallery of the U.S. House of Representativesuntil I became bored with all the talk and went on another adventure.Whenever I ran up the steps to the huge bronze doors of the Rotunda, I would look back to the world below like a hero. As soon as the doors were opened, the sense of history surrounded me, and I knew it was someplace special. Those were lucky days, when an American citizen could wander in the Capitol and be a part of history.Once war was declared, some things changed in the nations capital. Because of concerns that Washington might be attacked, as London had been, everyone prepared. Kids at my elementary school wore dog tags, and each of us was fingerprinted. My father, a pipe worker, became a civil defense warden(民防队员). During an air-raid(空袭), his job was to turn off any leaking gas. Since he always had a cigarette in his mouth, maybe that was not a good choice, but he had a gas mask and flashlight hanging in the rafters of our basement. The mask looked like a monster in the ceiling. My 15-year-old brother was a junior civil defense warden. During air-raid drills, he knocked on doors and asked people to put out their lights. I remember huge searchlights that crisscrossed the skies during the drills, looking for enemy plane
