It wasnt his company that disappointed me. I was recovering from a bad grade in my study. I could have collapsed (崩溃) in tears right there at the table. When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didnt have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you.”Just last year, I was running a halfmarathon. With just 0.1 miles to go, I was out of gas. They think it is part of becoming an adult. They also think drinking is not that bad because so many people do it. They feel it is not as bad as taking drugs. It is easy for kids to get liquor (酒精饮料) by using fake identification (伪造证件). Parents may start to notice a change in their childs behavior if the child starts drinking. Kids who drink sometimes stop doing things they normally liked to do. They may keep telephone calls and meetings a secret and not want anybody to touch their things. They act moody (喜怒无常地) and do not have the same eating and sleeping habits.Parents need to stay involved in their kids lives. They should talk to their children about their problems to be aware of any changes.Parents can be the best protection. Children who get a lot of love can feel good about themselves. It helps them resist (抵抗) doing bad things even when other kids are doing them. Parents can also help set a good example by not drinking. They can have firm rules in the home that everyone follows.Give the children good ideas on how to say “no” to drinking, even when they are at a party. Try not to overreact or panic (惊慌) if the child tries alcohol. How you handle it can affect their attitude. It may be helpful to talk to other parents about setting up curfews (宵禁令) and rules about parties or other events.25According to the passage, what changes may happen to the kids who start drinking?ANothing serious will happen to them.BThey keep the same eating and sleeping habits.CThey can control their moods quite well.DSometimes they act secretly. 26According to the writer, if parents find their children try alcohol, they had better _.Apunish them at onceBask the police for helpCask their childrens friends for helpDset up curfews and rules about parties or other events with other parents解析:选D细节理解题。 27Which is the main subject discussed in the passage?ATeen health.BTeen education.CTeen drinking.DParents worries. 28From the last sentence of the first paragraph, we can see _.Aif you are not an adult, you cant buy liquor according to the lawBthe children can buy liquor without using fake identificationCthere isnt any ban on children buying liquorDusing fake identification is allowed解析:选A推理判断题。 CThe Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) finds that women gardeners voices speed up the growth of tomato plants much more than mens. In an experiment, the research found that tomato plants grew up to two inches taller if they were sung to by a female rather than a male. The most effective voice came from Sarah Darwin, whose greatgreat grandfather was the botanist (植物学家), Charles Darwin, one of the founding fathers of the RHS. She read a passage from On the Origin of Species and beat nine other “voices”. Her plant grew nearly two inches taller than the best performing male and half an inch taller than her nearest competitor. Colin Crosbie, Garden Manager at the RHS, said, “We just dont know why. It could be because they have a greater range of pitch (音高) and tone (音色) that affects the sound waves that hit the plant. Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light.”In the experiment, every plant was played a different voice, and the environmental conditions for all the plants remained the same throughout the experiment. To prove the results of the experiment, two plants were also left to grow in silence. The results showed that womens plants rose by an inch more than mens and much more than the plants left in complete silence. Miss Darwin said, “Im not sure if its my sweet tones or the text that I read from On the Origin of Species that made the plants listen, but either way, I think it is an honor to have such a voice, and especially fitting for me, because for years I have been studying wild tomatoes at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London. ”语篇解读:园艺工的性别对植物有影响吗?英国皇家园艺学会发现,女性园艺工种植的西红柿比男性园艺工种植的西红柿生长速度更快。29What is the purpose of this passage? ATo prove that women are better gardeners than men. BTo explain which kind of voice is better for plant growth. CTo report the results of an experiment on tomato plants. DTo explain the reason for the experiment results. 30How many tomato plants were chosen for this experiment? A9.B10. C11. D12. 文章第四段提到“She read a passage from On the Origin of Species and beat nine other voices” ,由此可知供研究的西红柿是十株,在第六段中又提到“To prove the results of the experiment, two plants were also left to grow in silence.” 31What can we learn about Sarah Darwin? AShe is one of the founders of the RHS. BShe is very proud of her sweet voice. CShe discovered why her voice benefited plants. DShe will work at the NHM in London after the experiment. ASarahs nearest competitor was also a woman. BTexts from On the Origin of Species can make plants grow faster. C.Mens voices have a greater range of pitch and tone than womens. DColin Crosbie predicted that womens voices were better for plants than mens. 解析:选A推理判断题。根据第四段中“Her plant grew nearly two inches taller than the best performing male and half an inch taller than her nearest competitor.”可知,萨拉的最接近的竞争对手也是女性。DElephants have four distinct personalities that help their hard survive in the African bush, scientists have found. With their grey skin, mournful eyes and slow plodding gait, you could be forgiven for thinking elephants are uniformly melancholy (忧郁的) creatures. But scientists have now discovered the largest living land animals have personalities to match their size. In a new study of African elephants, researchers have identified four distinct characters that are prevalent with a herd the leaders, the gentle giants, the playful rogues and the reliable plodders (辛勤工作的人)Each of the types has developed to help the giant mammals survive in their harsh environment and are almost unique in the animal kingdom, according to the scientists. Professor Lee and her colleague Cynthia Moss studied a herd of elephants in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya known as the EB family famous for their matriarch (女家长) Echo before she died in 2009. Using data collected over 38 years of watching this group, the researchers analysed them for 26 types of behaviour and found four personality traits tended to come to the fore. The strongest personality to emerge was that of the leader unlike other animals, where leadership tends to be won by the most dominant and aggressive individual, the elephants instead respected intelligence and problem solving in their leader. The playful elephants tended to be younger but were more curious and active. Eudora, a 40yearold female in the herd, seemed to be the most playful, consistently showing this trait throughout her life while playfulness in some of the other elephants declined with age. Gentle elephants, which included two 27yearold females Eleanor and Eliot, caressed and rubbed against others more than the others. Those that were reliable tended to be those that were most consistent at making good decisions, helped to care for infants in the herd and were calm when faced with threats. Echo and her youngest daughter Ebony seemed to be the most reliable. Professor Lee said that elephants with these traits tended to be the most socially integrated in the group while those who tended to be less reliable and pushy were more likely to split from the herd. 语篇解读:本文是一篇科普文,讲述了科学家所发现的非洲大象身上所具备的四种独有的特点,而这些特点对于大象种群的繁衍和生存起到了重要作用。33From the passage we get to know that _.Athe researchers reached their conclusion by analyzing the dateBthe research centered on the 26 types of behavior of the matriarchCthe scientists conducted the research by comparing elephants with other animalsDProfessor Phyllis Lee and her colleague spent nearly 38 years tracking the herd解析:选A细节理解题。从第6段可知,“the researchers analysed them for 26 types of behaviour and found .”,所以并不是以大象种群中女家长的26种行为作为中心研究对象。B错;通读全文可知,文中并没有把大象和其他的动物进行对比,所以C也错误;第6段中明确说到over 38 years, 所以D选项中的nearly错误。而A中信息在第6段明确提及,所以正确。34The leader of an elephant herd is not necessarily _.Aaggressive BreliableCintelligentDexperienced解析:选A推理判断题。第7段中提到“unlike other animals. instead respected intelligence and problem solving in their leader”可知,大象种群中的领袖不一定是要好斗和具有侵略性的。35According to the new findings of the scientists _.Aplayfulness of an elephant will always decline with ageBthose elephants which are caring and wise are most reliableCeach elephant can be matched with only one of the four personalitiesDonce becoming a member of a herd, an elephant will never split from it解析:选B细节理解题。通过第8段举例,我们可以得知这个叫做Eudora的大象虽然已经40岁了,但是依然还是playful,这说明A错误;通读全文,我们很容易发现每个大象身上不仅仅只具备文中提到的一种品质和特点,所以C错误;通过倒数第二段中“those who tended to be less reliable and pushy were more likely to split from the herd”可知,并不是说一旦成为一个种群的一员,就一定不会再从中分离。B选项在倒数第2段中可以找到依据“Those that were reliable tended to be those that were most consistent at making good decisions .”。第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。All over the world, animals and plants are in trouble. People are trying to find ways to help them. _36_Adopt an animal. Many zoos and wildlife organizations have programs that let kids donate money to help specific endangered animals. _37_Dont release fish or pets onto the wild._
