But an increasing number of Europeans are choosing to be so at an ever earlier age. This isn't the stuff of gloomy philosophical contemplations, but a fact of Europe's new economic landscape, embraced by sociologists, realestate developers and ad executives alike. The shift away from family life to solo lifestyle, observes a French sociologist, is part of the “irresistible momentum of individualism” over the last century. The communications revolution, the shift from a business culture of stability to one of mobility and the mass entry of women into the workforce have greatly wreaked havoc on(扰乱) Europeans' private lives.Europe's new economic climate has largely fostered the trend towards independence. The current generation of homealoners came of age during Europe's shift from social democracy to the sharper, more individualistic climate of American style capitalism. Raised in an era of privatization and increased consumer choice, today's techsavvy(精通技术的) workers have embraced a free market in love as well as economics. Modern Europeans are rich enough to afford to live alone, and temperamentally independent enough to want to do so.Once upon a time, people who lived alone tended to be those on either side of marriagetwenty something professionals or widowed senior citizens. While pensioners, particularly elderly women, make up a large proportion of those living alone, the newest group of singles are high earners in their 30s and 40s who increasingly view living alone as a lifestyle choice. Living alone was conceived to be negativedark and cold, while being together suggested warmth and light. But then came along the idea of singles. They were young, beautiful, and strong! Now, young people want to live alone. The booming economy means people are working harder than ever. And that doesn't leave much room for relationships. Pimpi Arroyo, a 35yearold composer who lives alone in a house in Paris, says he hasn't got time to get lonely because he has too much work. “I have deadlines which would make life with someone else fairly difficult.” Only an ideal woman would make him change his lifestyle, he says. Kaufmann, author of a recent book called The Single Woman and Prince Charming, thinks this fierce new individualism means that people expect more and more of mates, so relationships don't last longif they start at all. Eppendorf, a blond Berliner with a deep tan, teaches grade school in the mornings. In the afternoon she sunbathes or sleeps, resting up for going dancing. Just shy of 50, she says she'd never have wanted to do what her mother didgive up a career to raise a family. Instead, “I've always done what I wanted to do: live a selfdetermined life.”11More and more young Europeans remain single because _Athey are driven by an overwhelming sense of individualismBthey have entered the workforce at a much earlier ageCthey have embraced a business culture of stabilityDthey are pessimistic about their economic future12What is said about European society in the passage?AIt has fostered the trend towards small families.BIt is getting closer to Americanstyle capitalism.CIt has limited consumer choice despite a free market.DIt is being threatened by irresistible privatization.13According to Paragraph 3, the newest group of singles are _Awarm and lighthearted Bon either side of marriageCnegative and gloomy Dhealthy and wealthy14The author quotes Eppendorf to show that _Asome modern women prefer a life of individual freedomBthe family is no longer the basic unit of society in presentday EuropeCsome professional people have too much work to do to feel lonelyDmost Europeans conceive living a single life as unacceptable15What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?ATo review the impact of women becoming high earners.BTo contemplate the philosophy underlying individualism.CTo examine the trend of young people living alone.DTo stress the rebuilding of personal relationships.BAmericans often plan social gatherings on short notice,so don't be surprised if you get invited to someone's home or to see a movie or baseball game without much warning. If the time is convenient for you, surely accept their invitation. But if you're busy, don't be afraid to decline the invitation. Perhaps suggesting a time would be better.Your host won't be shamed.Invitations are usually sent in person or over the telephone. The main exception(例外)is for some formal occasions,in which case a written invitation will be mailed. You would normally receive a written invitation to a wedding(婚礼)For a casual dinner invitation, don't arrive more than 5 minutes early, because your host may still be preparing for your visit.Arriving more than 10 minutes late is considered rude if very few people were invited. If many people were invited,it's OK to arrive a little late, even as much as half an hour late. For example,it's OK to arrive late for a party, for a potluck(家常便饭)dinner or for a social gathering inviting a large group of people. If you're invited for dinner,it's proper to bring the host a bottle of wine,a gift basket of fruit,a box of candy,or a bouquet(束)of flowers.Don't bring roses,as men often give roses to women on a date.If you wish to thank the host for his or her hospitality(好客),it's right to call or send a brief written thankyou note the next day.16The passage is to tell us_.Ahow to accept Americans' invitationsBsomething about American social visitsCsomething about American business visitsDhow to make a living in America17The underlined word “decline” in the first paragraph most probably means “_”Aaccept BopposeCrefuse Dreceive18In America, invitations to a wedding are often sent _.Aby mail Bby faxCby email Dover the telephone19If an American only invites you to his home for an informal supper at 7:30 pm, you'd better reach his house at _.A7:14 pm B7:35 pmC7:45 pm D7:55 pm20According to the passage,in America_.Aif you're invited to a family as a guest, you can stay as long as you pleaseBif you're invited for a party, you must always be on timeCif you're invited for dinner, you'd better bring some presentsDyou must make a call to show your thanks after you get home from the dinner. 从文章第一段的but a fact of Europe's new economic landscape, embraced by sociologists, realestate developers and ad executives alike. Covering a length of 523 kilometres, it is home to a diversity of fishes and algae. Called Mother River by the Hakka people, it provides drinking water for residents not only in several cities along it but Hong Kong as well. With the fast development and booming population at present, the need for industrial water and drinking water is increasing every year, while the water quality is declining because waste water is discharged into the river at will. The serious situation of water resources requires people to save water and make every effort to ensure water quality in the Dongjiang/East River. 6
