Implementing the ContractBusiness Focus Packing Guidelines Packing Containers Shipping Marks Trading Doc: Packing ListsLanguage Focus Specimen Letters Useful ExpressionsDrills Put the following into Chinese: We supply the goods in strong export cartons, all of which have an inner lining of stout waterproof material. Since the goods will be transported by air, we agree to their being packed in cardboard boxes, which, however, must be strong and filled with stuffing so as to protect them from shocks and damage. We can meet your special requirements for packing but the extra expenses should be borne by you. As it will take us time to pack the goods to your requirements, we are afraid that the shipment may not be effected within the contracted time. We will take every step within our reach to improve the packing so as to protect the goods from damage. Packing Guidelines Packing in strong containers, adequately sealed and filled when possible; To provide proper bracing in the container, regardless of size, make sure the weight is evenly distributed; Goods should be palletized(用货盘装运) and when possible, containerized(集装箱); Packages and packing filler should be made of moisture-resistant material; To avoid pilferage, avoid writing contents or brand names on packages. Other safeguards include using straps, seals, and shrink wrapping.Packing Containers 1. Bag: It may be made of strong paper, linen (亚麻), canvas, rubber, etc. Polybag 塑料袋 Gunny bag 麻袋 Sack(麻袋): A large bag usually made of jute(黄麻). 2. Box: A small case, which may be of wood, cardboard or metal, any may have a folding lid. 3. Carton: It is made of light but strong cardboard, or fiberboard with double lids and bottoms, fixed by glue, adhesive tapes, or wire staples. 4. Case: A strong container. For extra strength it may have “battens”(木板条). Sometimes some thinner wood may be used with metal bands or wires. The inside of the case may be “lined” with various materials, e.g. damp resisting paper, tin foil, ect., to prevent damage by water, air or insects. 5. Crate: This is a case, but one not fully enclosed. It has a bottom and a frame ,sometimes open at the top. Crates are often built for the particular thing they have to carry. Machinery packed in crates needs a special bottom (a skid-滑动垫木) to facilitate handling. 6. Drum: A cylinder-shaped (圆柱形) container for carrying liquids, chemical, paint, etc. it is usually made of metal. Certain dry chemicals (non-inflammable) or powders are sometimes packed in wood or cardboard drums. 7. Barrel 琵琶桶,大桶 8. Can / Tin (罐头): A small metal container in which small quantity of paint, oil or certain foodstuffs are packed. 9. Bundle(捆): Miscellaneous goods packed without a container. A number of small cartons, etc. fixed together could be called a bundle. 11. Bale(大包): A package of soft goods (e.g. cotton, wood, sheepskin) tightly pressed together and wrapped in a protective material. Usual size is 30*15*15cm. It may be strengthened by metal bands. 13. Pallet(货盘,散装架): A large tray of platform for moving loads (by means of slings, etc.), e.g. from a lorry into a train or onto a ship, and so save time for handling of separate items. Contents: Name of the Packing List; Number and Date; Contract No. or L/C No.; Shipping Mark; Case No.; Item No. of Contract; Name of Commodity and Specifications; Unit; Quantity; Gross Weight; Net Weight; Measurement; SignatureSpecimen Letter 1 Re: Packing for Ready-made GarmentsA shipment of ready-made garments arrived on 12 August 2011. Having examined the goods thoroughly, we venture to say that the packing needs improvement. For instance, the cartons used are not strong enough to protect the contents from getting damaged during transit. We have enquired of some of our clients about the packing in question. They say:1.Such cartons are easy to cut open because the cardboard of which the cartons are made is rather thin, thus making pilferage possible. 2. During loading and unloading, the cartons are to be piled up, hence breakage is unavoidable because the cartons are too thin to stand heavy pressure. 3. The insurance companies, on knowing this, will shift their responsibilities to the goods being packed in cartons not fit for ocean transportation and refuse compensation for losses. From the above comments, you can readily see that our clients are justified in their worries about your packing. As far as packing is concerned, they prefer wooden cases to cartons for future shipments. We sincerely hope that you will take this matter into consideration and make necessary improvements so as to avoid unforeseen troubles arising from faulty packing. Your early response will be much appreciated. Specimen Letter 2 We refer to your L/C No. 234 stipulating 12 doz./box, 10 boxes/case. Our goods are packed 6 doz./packet, 6 packets/box and 10 boxes/case. Such packing is generally accepted by all our clients. To facilitate prompt shipment, we hope you will accept our original packing, and the packing charge of 0.2% will have to be added on top of our price. Should you agree to our proposal and amend the relative L/C immediately, we assure you that shipment will be effected before the time limit of L/C.Useful Expressions1. The packing must be seaworthy and strong enough to stand rough handling. 2. The goods are to be packed in wooden cases containing 30 dozens each.3.
