iCONN Training Manual November 2003 Acknowledgements This training manual was developed by Patricia Lord Clark, formerly Library Director at Miss Porter’s School and currently Bibliographic Instruction Coordinator at Trinity College, under contract with the Connecticut State Library (CSL), and pursuant to an agreement between CSL and the Connecticut Alliance of Regional Educational Service Centers. The manual was prepared under the direction of Jane Emerson and Bill Sullivan of the Connecticut Digital Library staff, with additional guidance and assistance from Sharon Brettschneider (Connecticut State Library), Betty Goyette (State Department of Education), Regional Educational Service Center staff (in particular, Dorothy Dugas and Nancy Patty from LEARN; James van Pelt from ACES, who made numerous, helpful suggestions to improve the clarity of the text), Jerilyn Van Leer (West Hartford Public Schools), and Connecticut Digital Library/reQuest staff (Steve Cauffman and Gail Hurley). The section on Wilson Biographies Plus was rewritten by Jane Emerson in February 2003 due to significant product changes. In addition, Jane Emerson prepared two appendices, “How Do I Register To Use iCONN?” and “InfoTrac Database Content”; Betty Goyette prepared the appendix, “Strategies for Bringing iCONN to Your School District” and the enclosed brochure, 10 Big Ideas for Using iCONN; a team consisting of Jane Emerson, Lois Garrison (Harwinton Consolidated School), Betty Goyette and Jerilyn Van Leer developed the appendix, “Sample Learning Activities”; and Gail Hurley developed the appendix, “What is reQuest?”. The manual is intended to provide a consistent guide for training workshops throughout Connecticut. The intended audience of these workshops is public school library media specialists, K-12. Upon completion of the workshop they will in turn train teachers and professional colleagues in their respective schools about the resources of the Connecticut Digital Library. The primary purpose of this manual is to ensure that all participants in such workshops across the state receive uniform training in the use of iCONN resources. The manual is also intended to save training preparation time by supplying the examples that will be used in the workshops (both half-day and one-day versions). The examples are curriculum-based in order to demonstrate how the iCONN resources can be used within the curriculum. The material in this manual is intended to be sufficient to teach either a half-day course (3 hours including questions and answers and a break time), or a full-day course. There are appropriate breaks in the text and supplemental materials to accommodate both formats. Alternatively, any of the individual components in this manual can be broken out and taught as separate modules. It is recommended that each library media specialist attend a full-day workshop as a trainee. After that, library media specialists may choose to use this manual in a more modular fashion as trainers. It provides all students, faculty and residents with online access to essential library and information resources. It is administered by the Connecticut State Library in conjunction with the Department of Higher Education. Through iCONN, a core level of information resources including secured access to licensed databases is available to every citizen in Connecticut. In addition, specialized, research, information resources are available to college students and faculty. iCONN began in 2000 when the Connecticut General Assembly provided funding for the purchase of licensed information databases for Connecticut’s libraries, schools and colleges. The Digital Library was one of several recommendations by Lieutenant Governor M. Jodi Rell in the Fall of 1999. The goals of iCONN are: To ensure universal access to a core level of library and information resources for every resident of Connecticut through their public library, school, college, and from home. To help provide necessary information resources to every school in Connecticut so that all students are prepared to function in an information society. To provide information resources to the increasing number of students taking advantage of on-line courses at Connecticut’s colleges and universities. To enhance the quality of teaching, research and education at Connecticut’s colleges and universities by supporting online information resources. To support the information needs of all Connecticut citizens. Governance iCONN is a joint project of the Connecticut State Library and the Department of Higher Education. The project is administered by the Connecticut State Library under the auspices of the Commission for Educational Technology and the Connecticut Digital Library Advisory Board (CDLAB). About iCONN provides extensive information about the Connecticut Digital Library, including promotional materials useful for a general audience. About Connecticut links you to a Connecticut State Library page with many links to historical documents and current news about Connecticut. Help provides answers to patrons’ questions about how to access iCONN and where to go for further help. Site Index indexes all sections of the iCONN homepage relevant to patrons. For Librarians/Teachers is the most important link to check frequently. The opening screen displays current iCONN news, information about database trials, and special features. Notice that at this screen the blue navigation buttons (beginning with Discounts below) have changed. Clicking on them links to more information for librarians and teachers. Discounts displays the current statewide discounts available to school libraries for databases that are not part of iCONN. Free Trials gives information about how to participate in test trials for databases being considered by the Connecticut Digital Library. reQuest will tell you everything you need to know about the reQuest service, including how to join, training, service descriptions, etc. Training keeps you updated about training for iCONN databases and reQuest; provides links to workshops and presentations, and also to user guides, search tips, online tutorials and other online resources. Directories links to statewide directories of librarian e-mail addresses, public libraries, listservs, and continuing education for librarians. Support Materials is the best place for staff to obtain printable and downloadable promotional materials, including press releases, bookmarks and posters, articles about iCONN and presentations; for technical support contacts; and for updated iCONN usage statistics. Help for Librarians/Teachers provides detailed iCONN help information for staff with links to FAQs and technical support contacts. Site Index indexes all sections of the iCONN homepage relevant to staff. Clicking on the iCONN logo above the navigation buttons will always take you back to the iCONN homepage. Stress to your faculty and students that iCONN assures access to a library that never closes its doors. It is always available online from homes, from school, and from public libraries. THE iCONN DATABASES You access all iCONN databases from the “Welcome to iCONN” homepage. The Access from School and the Access from Home links under the K-12 school bus may list slightly different databases. When students access iCONN from home, they use their public library card number as the password and are taken to their public library database page, not their school database page. Your public libraries may subscribe to other databases that may be incorporated among the iCONN databases, creating the possibility of different database lists. InfoTrac OneFile is a meta-database, and most of the other Gale Group databases are included in OneFile (re: Appendix). OneFile includes indexing for more than 6,000 magazines, business and scholarly journals of which more than 3,100 are full-text, 5 newspaper indexes (no full-text newspapers), and reports from 89 newswire services. If you want one-stop shopping, this is the database to use, but it may be overwhelming for many students. Audience: Middle School and Up Expanded Academic ASAP contains all the refereed journals, other scholarly journals, and upper-level magazines indexed in OneFile. Best for higher level secondary students and faculty. Audience: High School InfoTrac Student Edition is specifically designed for secondary school libraries. It features over 360 student-appropriate journals (most full-text), maps, newspaper articles, and reference materials. To see a comparison of the student-oriented databases, look under “Support Materials” on the iCONN homepage. Audience: High School InfoTrac Junior Edition includes some of the materials in the Kids Edition, plus an expanded list of magazines and reference resources. Audience: Middle School Designed for K-6, this database indexes age-appropriate, full-text magazines, news articles, maps, almanacs, and other reference works. Audience: Elementary School Informe! contains indexing and full-text of over 60 Hispanic journals and one full-text newspaper. These are periodicals originating in Spanish, not just translations. Audience: Middle School and Older A good multi-source database that fits between InfoTrac Student Edition (which has fewer resources) and InfoTrac OneFile (which has more). This database does include the full-text of the Washington Post and Christian Science Monitor. Audience: Middle School and Older Professional Collection is the custom selection of 300 journals focused on matters of interest to professional educators. It is very important to demonstrate this database to the teachers and administrators in your school. Audience: Adult Custom Newspapers has the full text of four major newspapers. Audience: Elementary School and Older Full-text background resources in Social Studies, Science, Biography, History and Literature. Especially strong in analytical literary materials. Audience: Middle School and Older In-depth biographical materials on over 100,000 individuals from antiquity to the present. Audience: Middle School and Older Full global coverage of finance, economic, and marketing news, including stock prices, industry statistics, and business journals. Audience: High School and Older A wealth of medical information including medical and drug dictionaries, and 500 full text medical journals and magazines. Audience: Middle School and Older Plot summaries, lists of award-winning books, recommended reading lists, are all available in this database that can be searched by author, subject, title and genre. The search functions and features are the same for each of these databases. If you understand how to search one Infotrac database, you understand how to search them all! InfoTrac OneFile Expanded Academic ASAP Custom Newspapers Professional Collection Informe! InfoTrac Student Edition InfoTrac Junior Edition InfoTrac Kids Edition General Reference Gold The manual uses Expanded Academic ASAP for the demonstration searches. Each of the search examples can easily be reworded in age-appropriate vocabulary and searched in the other InfoTrac Editions. For the purposes of training, it is best to follow the manual to understand the nuances of the search engine. At a later time, you can practice the searches in the databases that best fit the students and faculty of your school. Be aware that InfoTrac Student, Junior, and Kids Editions have two possible interfaces: the standard InfoTrac interface, that you will use in Expanded Academic ASAP, and a “Kid-friendly” interface. Many public libraries present the standard InfoTrac interface, but the iCONN interface for schools is the “Kid-friendly” version. InfoTrac Search Tips The following InfoTrac Search Tips are provided by the Gale Group: Searching Subject Search A Subject Search looks for information by topic. If you type in your topic and no matching Subject Heading is found, InfoTrac automatically defaults to a Keyword Search. This means that you’ll see a citation list and NOT the Subject Guide.
