Asia.It is bordered to the north by Burma and Laos,to the east by Laos and Cambodia,to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia,and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Burma.Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast,and Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea to the southwest.,Thailand is divided into 76 provinces,which are gathered into 5 groups of provinces by location.There are also 2 special governed districts:the capital Bangkok and Pattaya,of which Bangkok is at provincial level and thus often counted as a province.,Thailand is the worlds 51st-largest country in terms of total area,with an area of approximately 513,000 km2,and is the 20th-most-populous country,with around 64 million people.The capital and largest city is Bangkok,which is Thailands political,commercial,industrial and cultural hub.About 75%of the population is ethnically Thai,14%is of Chinese origin,and 3%is ethnically Malay,the rest belong to minority groups including Mons,Khmers and various hill tribes.The countrys official language is Thai.The primary religion is Buddhism,which is practiced by around 95%of the population.,Thailand experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1996,and is presently a newly industrialized country and a major exporter.Tourism also contributes significantly to the Thai economy.There are approximately 2.2 million legal and illegal migrants in Thailand,and the country has also attracted a number of expatriates from developed countries.,Social Etiquette,Meeting Etiquette,1.,The wai is the traditional form of greeting,given by the person of lower status to the person of higher status.,2.,Thais generally use first rather than surnames,with the honorific title Khun before the name.Khun is an all-purpose form of address that is appropriate for both men and women,.,3.,In general,wait for your host and hostess to introduce you to the other guests.This allows everyone to understand your status relative to their own,and thus know who performs the wai and how low the head should be bowed.,The Wai,The wai is the common form of greeting and,adheres to strict,rules of protocol.,Raising both hands,palms joined with the fingers pointing upwards as if in prayer,lightly touching the body somewhere between the chest and the forehead,is the standard form.,The wai is both a sign of respect as well as a greeting.Respect and courtesy are demonstrated by the height at which the hands are held and how low the head comes down to meet the thumbs of both hands.,The wai may be made while sitting,walking,or standing.,The person who is junior in age or status is the first one to offer the wai.,The senior person returns the wai,generally with their hands raised to somewhere around their chest.,If a junior person is standing and wants to wai a senior person who is seated,the junior person will stoop or bow their head while making the wai.,If there is a great social distance between two people,the wai will not be returned.,The Wai,Video,Finery,Etiquette,The Thai peoples has its own traditional costumes of which the Thais are proud in some formal occasions.,Generally speaking,the Thai dress with bright color.In Thailand,different color represents different date.For example,yellow for Monday,pink for Tuesday,green for Wednesday,orange for Thursday,light blue for Friday,purple for Saturday,red for Sunday.,Because of the sweltering weather,the Thai dress with shirts,slacks and dress.Only in business,they will wear dark-colored suit or dress.In public,especially in the palace and temple,it is forbidden to wear vest,shorts and miniskirts.,The Thai must take off shoes before entering room or temple.Besides,please dont show your sole in front of others particularly the Thai whether standing or sitting.Please bring your own slippers because the local hotels dont provide them for you.,Why does yellow represent Monday?,It is said
