The background of FriendsChapter Dynamic Equivalent Theory and Subtitle TranslationChapter Case Study for Successful Subtitle translation in FriendsChapter Case study for relatively unsuccessful subtitle translation in FriendsChapter Conclusion Chapter Introduction l TV is a major cultural means of human communication nowadays. More and more Chinese are starting to show great interest in foreign movies and TV shows. l In the subtitle translation of the American sitcom “Friends” , a lot of good examples can be seen because the translators have applied the translation theory and principles. l On the contrary, there are also some wrong examples showing that the translators have violated the translation principles. Chapter The background of Friendsl 2.1 Brief introduction of Friendsl 2.2 Popularity of Friends in Chinal 2.3 Fansub groups and the subtitle translation on the Internet Chapter Dynamic Equivalent Theory and Subtitle Translationl 3.1 Brief account of dynamic equivalence theoryl 3.2 Features of American TV series subtitle translation Chapter Case Study for Successful Subtitle translations in Friendsl There are many successful translations in the subtitles of Friends, which not only convey the original ideas but also cater to the Chinese viewers appetites.l Monica: See, you kind of stole l My thunder.” ( episode 1,Season 7)l Subtitle: 你抢了我的风头。 l Monica bumped into Rachel and Ross, l who were making out outside Monicasl apartment right before Monicas marriage.l If translated directly into 你偷了我的l雷, it will only baffle the viewers. By usingl the traditional Chinese way of expression according to the original context, the translation is clear and accurate. Chapter Case study for relatively unsuccessful subtitle translations in Friendsl Example:l Monica: Do you have a plan?l Phoebe: I dont even have a pla. ( Episode 4, Season l)l Subtitle: 我根本毫无计划。l In this dialogue, pla obviously comes from plan, which reflects Phoebes strong sense of humor. 我根本毫无计划 is an honest translation, but falls short of humorous sense. We can directly choose the Chinese idiom 八字还没一撇. Monica: Do you have a plan?Phoebe: I dont even have a pla. ( Episode 4, Season l)Subtitle: 我根本毫无计划。 Chapter Conclusionl With the potent surge of American TV series upon Chinese young peoples leisure time, the Internet has become a major source where they can gain happiness and knowledge. Since the online translators are mostly fans of series and organized by their own, the diversity of them has determined the quality of the subtitle translation. l Dynamic equivalence theory stresses on the readability of the translation rather than the original sentence structure. Most of the subtitles made by relatively famous Fansub groups are successful in terms of the fact that they convey the original ideas clearly and combine them naturally with Chinese elements. But some of them are translated improperly, both because the translators negligence and lack of deep perspectives of western culture. Chapter Suggestionsl The following suggestions are put forward based on the above discussions and analyses: l 1) According to dynamic equivalence theory, the translators should be flexible and make some changes when necessary in order to serve the average Chinese viewers.l 2) Translators of American TV series should pay special attention to idioms, slang, words coined in vogue and other popular entertainment figures, like movie stars, Rock bands and even cartoon characters.l 3) The members of Fansub groups are supposed to improve their English translation competency as well as their knowledge of western culture. Thus, certain motivation system may be adapted. l 4) The academic world should pay more attention to the study of subtitle translation, and strive to put forward better theories guiding the practice of subtitle translation.
