新概念二Lesson86课堂内容Out of controlAs the man tried to swing the speedboat round, the steering wheel came away in his hands. He waved desperately to his companion, who had been water skiing for the last fifteen minutes. Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the sea. The speedboat had struck a buoy, but it continued to move very quickly across the water. Both men had just begun to swim towards the shore, when they noticed with dismay that the speedboat was moving in a circle. It now came straight towards them at tremendous speed. In less than a minute, it roared past them only a few feet away. After it had passed, they swam on as quickly as they could because they knew that the boat would soon return. They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. On this occasion, however, it had slowed down considerably. The petrol had nearly all been used up. Before long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water.Part 1 Basic words and expressions1. out of control 失控out of 失去、欠缺My tongue tends to get a bit out of control. We are out of bread. 我们的面包吃完了。Tony walked so fast that he was soon out of sight. 托尼走得很快,不久就无影无踪了。He has been out of work for two months. 他失业两个月了。2. swing v 转向 swing round 使突然转向 A rope is swinging in the wind. He is too young to go to school. The box is so heavy that he cant lift it. The box is too heavy for him to lift. 二、sothat与enough to的转换 1当that引导的从句为肯定式时,若从句主语与主句主语相同时,sothat可转换为 enough to结构;若从句主语与主句主语不相同时,sothat可转换为enough for sb. to结构。例如: Tom is so old that he can go to school. Tom is old enough to go to school. The box is so light that the child can lift it. The box is light enough for the child to lift.2当that引导的从句为否定式时,若从句主语与主句主语相同时,sothat可转换为enough to的否定结构;若从句主语与主句主语不相同时,sothat可转换为 enough for sbto的否定结构。注意:转换后的形容词(副词)要用其相应的反义词。例如: The man is so old that he cant go to work. The man isnt young enough to go to work. The desk is so heavy that I cant move it. The desk isnt light enough for me to move.三、enough to的句式为否定式时, enough to可以转换为tooto结构。但转换后的tooto结构中的形容词(副词)要用其相应的反义词。例如: He is not old enough to do the job. He is too young to do the job.Tom didnt walk slowly enough for us to keep up with him.Tom walked too fast for us to keep up with him. Exercise 1变换句型练习:1. a. Some of them said angrily that we should return to where we came from. The children sometimes threw stones at me or drove me home from school. Most of my teachers took no notice of me, but not Dorothy Bean, my history teacher. Miss Bean was angry at how badly I was treated, but she didnt say this to me. Miss Bean showed her respect for me by teaching me just like anyone else. Instead of being unnoticed , I was given a chance to show that I was clever. Miss Bean was the first teacher who ever made me think of myself. She always wanted to know what I thought about difficult questions. She expected me to have my own idea. Miss Bean taught me that thinking for oneself was the real key to education. One day, when I was not listening to her in class, Miss Bean suddenly threw an eraser at me. The eraser hit me on the head and sent my pencil flying. The whole class were very surprised at first, then started laughing. This event(事情) became famous in the school and, because it happened to me, the students wanted to know me. Even though there are a lot of people( and cars and trucks and pollution), the city is great! For example, I love many of the modern skyscrapers(摩天大楼). I also love the old temples(), and the wonderful tree-lined streets. But some people in Shanghai just dont stop to think about how beautiful their city is and how they can help to keep it that way. Or maybe they just dont care? There are a lot of litterbugs(随意扔垃圾的人) in Shanghai, people who throw their rubbish everywhere. Im talking about people of all agesold people, middleaged people, high school and middle school students. Why dont they just find a rubbish bin(垃圾箱) since there are many of them on every street? If you want to turn a place that is very beautiful into something that is very ugly, just cover it with rubbish. A pleasant tree-lined street can look like a garbage dump(垃圾场) at once! What should we do with people that litter? I hope when we catch them doing it, we bring them to the center of the city, and throw the things they dropped at them! Perhaps that would make them stop and think before they litter again.I do have a small suggestion for Chinas middle-school students. Next time you are about to throw something on the ground, stop and think about how beautiful your city is. Then find a rubbish bin and “pretend you are Yao Ming”dunk(扣篮) the rubbish in the basket and score 2 points for the environment! 1.The first paragraph mainly tells us_ .A. people in Shanghai are fond of high buildingsB. streets are so narrow that cars are crowded on roadsC. Shanghai is a nice city with plenty of beauty everywhereD. there are a lot of cars and trucks and people in Shanghai2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. All the people in Shanghai dont find a rubbish-bin to throw their rubbish into it.B. Only middle-school students should throw rubbish into a rubbish-bin.C. There are so many rubbish bins on every street that people cant stand(忍受)them.D. Some people in Shanghai are thinking about how they can keep the city beautiful.3.From the passage we can infer that_ .A. people in Shanghai always love its natureB. environment protection is very important to ShanghaiC. Shanghai is a very beautiful international cityD. throwing rubbish everywhere is an impolite sign.DWhen did you last see a polar(极地的) bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, air temperature was 3, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island , New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group, this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the bodys temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits(or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits(or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental(精神的). The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says,“When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away(漂走).” 1. The members of the Polar Bear Club_ .A. should be easy to make friends withB. must swim outdoors at least 10 times in the four cold monthsC. must agree to swim outdoors from October through February .D. must reach the age of 602. Which of the following sentences is true according to the passage? A. Doctors encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively. B. Doctors point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming. C. Doctors believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer. D. Doctors have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. 3. What does the underlined word mean in the sentence“When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”
