And ask several students to recite the passage in Ex 8 on Page 9. Step II Background informationThe speaking strategies in this unit are using photos in discussions. It is vital to provide information before starting to speak. Only after students get enough input can they give their opinions and reasons. If possible, play some video clips about Asian elephants and orangutans so that students may have a good knowledge of the endangered animals.Show the following on the PowerPoint or print them as handout. ASIAN ELEPHANTMany experts believe there is now no future for the Asian elephant outside protected areas. With the possible exception of parts of India, elephant populations have declined substantially in all countries during the past few decades. Even in India, the species has lost ground in the northeast; while in the south poaching for ivory threatens the genetic viability of the population. Historically, the major causes for the decline of the Asian elephant have been capture for domestication and loss of habitat in the face of the expanding human population. Even today, unsustainable capture (often illegal) persists in some countries, while human expansion continues to reduce and fragment the forest habitat, constricting elephant populations to small numbers which cannot survive in the long-term. Asian elephants are now extinct in West Asia, Java, and most of China, but they still occur in isolated populations scattered across 13 Asian countries. However, most of these populations are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and conflict with humans. Habitat loss and humanelephant conflict, which are often intimately linked, are the biggest threats. The population of Asian elephants today stands at between 25,600 and 32,750 in the wild with an additional 15,000 in captivity. The Asian elephant is listed as endangered on IUCNs Red List of Threatened Animals and is also on Appendix I of CITES, meaning that international mercial trade is not allowed. ORANGUTANEverything orangutans need is in the trees. Their favorite food is fruit, especially figs, and they seem to know what fruit is ripe in what part of the forest at what time. They will occasionally eat insects or small mammals, but tend to be herbivores most of the time. They get their water from where rainfall collects on leaves and in the holes of trees. Orangutans even sleep in the trees. They build a new platform nest from leaves and branches each night and sleep 40 to 60 feet off of the ground! Step III SpeakingDeal with Ex 9&10.Ask students to read the information about the endangered animals. Then use the Key Words in Ex 10 to plan a programme to protect the above endangered animals.Deal with Ex 11.Ask students to work in pairs. Discuss the problems and solutions using the expressions from the Function. They should agree on at least two important things. Remind students they should use patterns to give opinions, agreeing and reasons. They should use the expressions in Function File to justify arguments.Deal with Ex 12.Students will work in small groups and make their voice heard. Then ask several groups to present their dialogues in front of the class.(After the presentation)T: Well done. Im glad you have so many good ways to do something for the endangered animals. As Liu Hua said, knowing how many elephants there are, and where they live, is the key to deciding which populations are most important to protect. Please work with local people, especially farmers, to reduce humanelephant conflict. What everyone can help is never to buy Ivory. Save an elephant and make your money work for them not against them. If you travel to exotic places or even to a shopping mall near you, never buy anything that looks like ivory as it probably is. Make your voice count and say NO to ivory.Speak up for the Orangutan ! Call to Action! The most simple but effective way is to write a letter or email to make yourself heard. Here is a sample letter, you may read it after class. Ok, I believe every one of you will do your best to protect the endangered animals. So much for the Speaking. Lets e to Lesson 2 in Language Power. Please turn your books to Page 54 and we will do some exercises to give opinions and agreeing. A sample letter to speak up for the OrangutanDear Sir Terry,It has recently e to my attention that, as a direct consequence of my actions as a consumer, the Orangutan is in imminent danger of being extinct. As a regular customer of yours I would like you to help me make informed purchase decisions and help prevent this wonderful species going into terminal decline.Palm oil is used in 1 in 10 of all consumables sold in British supermarkets (though it is often labeled as vegetable oil). Two of the main areas where it is produced are Borneo and Sumatra the only two islands where orangutans still exist in the wild. Rainforests are being converted to oil palm plantations at an alarming rate, despite the existence of over 25 million hectares of previously-cleared land In Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) alone. The rainforest targeted for new plantations is the last remaining habitat of species such as the Orangutan which, at the current rate of population decline, are likely to be extinct by the end of this decade. Not only is the Orangutan threatened by loss of habitat, but palm oil plantation workers are also deliberately killing animals when they enter plantations, as they are perceived to be a threat to their crops. Many hardwood products carry labels that show that they have not been sourced from fragile rainforest. In a similar way, I would like your pany to clearly label products containing palm oil sourced from plantations that have not involved forest conversion, and withdraw palm oil based products that you cannot guarantee have e from sustainable sources. I have written to all the major British supermarkets and think that it would be very good PR for you to be the first to take a strong moral stance on this issue.I do not believe that your pany is aware of the role that it is playing in forcing the Orangutan to the brink of extinction (this issue has only recently e to light) but for further background information please see:cockroach.org.uksustainable-palmoil.orgpalmoil.org.ukhelenbuckland.co.uk/palm/safepalmoil.orgKiller facts:According to the Indonesian Forestry Department the Orangutan population in 1990 was 200,000. In the year 2000 there were only 50,000 Orangutans left. Their demise is directly attributable to the encroachment of the palm oil plantations on their habitat. The Bornean Orangutan Survival Foundation estimates that if palm oil concessions continue to replace forest at the current rate then within 3 years a viable future for the orangutan in the wild will be impossible. This means that by xx, if action is not urgently taken, then Orangutans will have reached the point of no return.I look forward to receiving information on your panys policy regarding palm oil. If a policy does not already exist, please tell me what steps you will be taking to ensure that I can shop in your store safe in the knowledge that I am not contributing to wiping out yet another species. With thanks in advance!Yours sincerely,Arthur SmithStudents may have different opinions. Their order may vary from others. Then ask students to write about their five choices. Give reasons fro their choices. Show the following on the PowerPoint.I think we should Thats why Personally, I think so that Dont you think ?I think we need to basically to Why dont we ? The main reason is to Governments should because Give students an example:I think we should stop using such a lot of fossil fuels. Thats why there the greenhouse effect. After students finish their sentences, ask them to pare their sentences to other group members. Then several students will be asked to read their sentences to the class. Step V PracticeDeal with Ex4 on Page 55.Show the phrases in Ex 4 on the PowerPoint and ask students to read them together. Then ask students to explain their meaning. Make sure every student is clear about these phrases. Students are given eight minutes to finish the exercise. Eight minutes later, check the answers with the whole class. If time is limited, leave it as homework. Step VI Homework1. Finish Ex 2&3 in Word Power on Page 62.2. List the disasters you know.3. Give your opinions and reasons about natural disasters.
