We packed up our stuff and moved across the country to settle into our new home. Once there I was worried about the lack of extended family and thought I would miss the convenience of having relatives nearby. My aunt explained to my children (and myself) that there are many different kinds of family and not all of them have two parents in the home. I didnt think too much of this speech, being rather shell-shocked after the divorce, but her words stuck with me. It wasnt too long after we settled in that friends and neighbors began to come over to meet us and extend invitations for outings. Many single ladies lived in this particular locale and were very loving and affectionate with my school-aged children. After they got to know the kids better we began to get calls: Can I borrow your kids? I want to go to the circus and want to take them! I am going fossil hunting with my geology group: would your son like to come along? I am going hiking. Can I take your kids? How would your kids like to learn how to drive a mule? And, on and on it went like that. Not only did my children benefit from the outings by learning new things, they learned manners, geology, ecology, respect for animals and too many good things to mention. Our neighbors enjoyed the contact with the young folks, too. My daughter, now grown and with a child of her own, mentioned to me a few days ago how much she enjoyed the outings with our extended family while growing up. My son still recalls going fossil hunting years ago and still talks about it! We are still friends with all these neighbors although we are all older. Now that my own kids are grown up I find myself looking around the neighborhood myself for families with young children. I might want to go looking for frogs and turtles by the creek . or maybe the circus . and, I might just say: Can I borrow your kids?41. Upon arrival, why did the aunt explain something to the writers children?A. To comfort her B. To ease her painC. To point out a phenomenon D. To discuss problems with her42. Inherited diseases, brain disorders associated with mental illness, and head injuries can all affect the way the brain works and upset the daily activities of the rest of the body.Problems that can affect the brain include:Brain tumors. A tumor is a swelling caused by overgrown tissue. A tumor in the brain may grow slowly and produce few symptoms until it becomes large, or it can grow and spread rapidly, causing severe and quickly worsening symptoms. Brain tumors in children can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors usually grow in one place and may be curable through surgery if theyre located in a place where they can be removed without damaging the normal tissue near the tumor. A malignant tumor is cancerous and more likely to grow rapidly and spread.Headaches. Of the many different types of headaches, the most frequently occurring include tension headache (the most common type), caused by muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders; migraine, an intense, recurring headache with an unclear cause; and cluster headache, considered by some to be a form of migraine. Migraines occur with or without warning and may last for several hours or days. There seems to be an inherited predisposition to migraines as well as certain triggers that can lead to them. People with migraines may experience dizziness, numbness, sensitivity to light, and nausea, and may see flashing zigzag lines before their eyes.Mental illness. Mental illnesses are psychological and behavioral in nature and involve a wide range of problems in thought and function. Certain mental illnesses are now known to be linked to structural abnormalities or chemical dysfunction of the brain. Some mental illnesses are inherited, but often the cause is unknown. Injuries to the brain and chronic drug or alcohol abuse also can trigger some mental illnesses. Signs of chronic mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may first show up in childhood. Mental illnesses that can be seen in younger people include depression, eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and phobias.Head injuries. Head injuries fit into two categories: external (usually scalp) injuries and internal head injuries. Internal injuries may involve the skull, the blood vessels within the skull, or the brain. Fortunately, most childhood falls or blows to the head result in injury to the scalp only, which is usually more frightening than threatening. An internal head injury could have more serious implications because the skull serves as the protective helmet for the delicate brain.50. What will happen if something goes wrong with the brain?A. Rabena 接受采访时回答了记者5个问题(第61到65)。请从下列提问(A-F)中选出与他的回答相匹配的问题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。; (单词量:650)Questions:A: China is well-known for its diverse culture. What do you think?B: How do you get to know China?C. Whats your way of getting immersed in China?D: Have you ever observed festivals in China here?E: Whats your impression of the Chinese people?F: Do you feel like a celebrity in China?61: Aaron Jed B. Rabena: “Do what the Romans do” is the maxim I held on while in China, but in this case it is “Do what the Chinese do” since I wanted on my own volition to fully immerse myself with the Chinese. I realized that the difference in going to a country as a tourist or having been able to reside for more than a year as a student is that there are things which you will only be able to appreciate and value as you go along with time. In the former, your mind is quick-set in a sense that you tend to pounce on the fun and recreation. Theres nothing wrong with it but to be able to assimilate the culture, you need longer time to realize why they act they why they do, and the rationale behind those acts. 62: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:In studying in China, I did not just learn my major from within the classroom but also from without. I greatly appreciate the fact that China has a very rich and unique culture that is well-sustained and has been valued by its people for thousands of years. I, for one, have been accustomed to the observance of it, from their cultural events, to the cultural traits and to their cuisines. In addition, I have travelled into some of the cities in China and I cant help but to be fascinated by the magnificence of its cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Wuhan. The historical ancient sites are well-preserved to remind locals and tourists alike of their prestigious heritage. 63: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:Shandong province is the place where the eminent Chinese sage Confucius was born. As I am studying in its capital city Jinan, you cannot help but notice the amicability and kindness of the people which only goes to show that the values Confucius espoused thousands of years ago are still widely practiced. I remember that when I was on the train to go to Shanghai to see the Shanghai Expo 2010, I was not able to book my ticket early which made me displaced inside the train and bear the burden of standing for three hours, but then some Chinese discovering that I am a foreigner seeming helpless and unable to speak their language, found a seat for me when other passengers alighted the train. 64: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:In fact, I have been oft-times mistaken as a Chinese when people suddenly ask me for some directions which I just reply by making short statements or admitting that I am not Chinese. I even had the privilege of celebrating the Chinese New Year in the countryside in Hubei province upon the invitation of my Chinese friend. Chinese New Year is their version of the Western Christmas and New Year combined. It is a time where families eat in a banquet together, exchange gifts and well-wishes with each other. There, I was treated like a part of the family. It was also there I learned that when you cheer your glass with an older person, his glass should be higher than yours as a sign of respect. These signs of respect and obedience are values that are very admirable about the Chinese. 65: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:From my interactions with the Chinese, I realized that China also has immense diversity when it comes to their dialects where almost every province has its distinct sub-culture to be proud of. The cuisines vary from province to province and each has its own specialty or delicacy to brag about. Those in the North like noodles and dumplings, while those in the South are fond of rice. Also, the Northerners and Southerners are distinguished by their contrasting accents. It was very nice to get your invitation to spend/ weekend with you.
