2014高考英语阅读理解:2013暑假练习题(9)及答案解析 (第 A篇)I am a writer. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language the way it can evoke (唤起)an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth.Language_is_the_tool_of_my_trade. And I use them all all the Englishes I grew up with.Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But I feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken” , as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. Ive heard other terms used, “limited English” , for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people s perceptions (认识) of the limited English speaker.I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up,my mother s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I wont get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”; and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal (内在的) language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure. I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show: her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.语篇解读本文主要记叙了作者在不同时期对母亲所使用的语言的不同看法。1By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that_.A. she uses English in foreign tradeB. she is fascinated by languagesC. she works as a translatorD. she is a writer by profession解析推理判断题。此句中the tool of my trade中的trade指的是职业。由本文第一句可知“我”是一名作家;此句又说语言是“我”的职业工具,故此句指的自然是“我”的职业为作家。答案D2The author used to think of her mother s English as _.A. impoliteB. amusingC. imperfect D. practical解析推理判断题。由文中倒数第二段中“.because she expressed them imperfectly, her thoughts were imperfect”一句可知选C,作者一度以为自己妈妈所说的英语是不完美的。答案C3Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?A. But when he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care was the power of his peer(同龄人) group. The lack of right male (男性的) role models in many of their lives at home and particularly in the school environment (环境) means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against. They dont see men succeeding in society so it doesnt occur to them that they could make something of themselves.Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture(文化) is allpowerful. Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them. Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a childs peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child. Its pointless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games. Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problemssomewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children.6. Inherited diseases, brain disorders associated with mental illness, and head injuries can all affect the way the brain works and upset the daily activities of the rest of the body.Problems that can affect the brain include:Brain tumors. A tumor is a swelling caused by overgrown tissue. A tumor in the brain may grow slowly and produce few symptoms until it becomes large, or it can grow and spread rapidly, causing severe and quickly worsening symptoms. Brain tumors in children can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors usually grow in one place and may be curable through surgery if theyre located in a place where they can be removed without damaging the normal tissue near the tumor. A malignant tumor is cancerous and more likely to grow rapidly and spread.Headaches. Of the many different types of headaches, the most frequently occurring include tension headache (the most common type), caused by muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders; migraine, an intense, recurring headache with an unclear cause; and cluster headache, considered by some to be a form of migraine. Migraines occur with or without warning and may last for several hours or days. There seems to be an inherited predisposition to migraines as well as certain triggers that can lead to them. People with migraines may experience dizziness, numbness, sensitivity to light, and nausea, and may see flashing zigzag lines before their eyes.Mental illness. Mental illnesses are psychological and behavioral in nature and involve a wide range of problems in thought and function. Certain mental illnesses are now known to be linked to structural abnormalities or chemical dysfunction of the brain. Some mental illnesses are inherited, but often the cause is unknown. Injuries to the brain and chronic drug or alcohol abuse also can trigger some mental illnesses. Signs of chronic mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may first show up in childhood. Mental illnesses that can be seen in younger people include depression, eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and phobias.Head injuries. Head injuries fit into two categories: external (usually scalp) injuries and internal head injuries. Internal injuries may involve the skull, the blood vessels within the skull, or the brain. Fortunately, most childhood falls or blows to the head result in injury to the scalp only, which is usually more frightening than threatening. An internal head injury could have more serious implications because the skull serves as the protective helmet for the delicate brain.50. What will happen if something goes wrong with the brain?A.
