of guessing scientists names.First, the students may think of a famous scientist or inventor and some information about his life. Some questions about scientists are given as examples. Then work with another pair and guess who pair B is describing by asking yes or no questions.Pair work will be involved in this part and more practice will be encouraged.T:Now,work in pairs.Think of a famous scientist or inventor.Find the answers to the following questions and try to think of more important facts about his or her life.(Show the following questions on the screen.)(This activity may be prepared before class. If that, the students can research their chosen scientist or inventor using the Internet or the library.)1.When and where was he born?2.Why was he famous?3.Where did he live and work?4.When did he discover or invent.?Give the students several minutes to prepare the questions.Minutes later ask several pairs give their questions and answers.(Show the following passage on the screen.)For example:Albert Einstein was born in Ulm,Germany in 1879.He was famous for the theory of relativity. It was published in 1905.In 1921,he won the Nobel Prize in Physics.Albert Einstein taught in Switzerland and Germany. He left Germany when Adolph Hitler came to power in 1933.He moved to the United States to continue his research. He worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton,New Jersey.Einstein became a citizen of the United States in 1940.Albert Einstein opposed wars.Albert Einstein died in1955.He was seventy years old.s say who can get it quickly and correctly.Pair A:Ask yes/no questions to discover who pair B is describing.Example:Was he born in the twentieth century?Pair B:Answer Pair At say the name of your famous person.(The teacher walks around and monitor their exercise,if necessary, give the students some help.)Step 4 Summary and homeworks homework is to finish exercises in your workbook. The Design of the Writing on the BlackboardModule 4Great ScientistsThe fourth periodListening:Albert EinsteinStephen HawkingPronunciation:Speaking:a famous scientist or inventor Record after Teaching_Activities and Research1.Find out more information about the famous person you choose.2.Find out more listening materials to practice.Period 5Everyday English;Cultural Corner;Task;Module FileThe General Idea of This PeriodIn This period we will learn everyday English, such as breakthrough, nickname, pass and well done.In cultural corner well learn something about rockets. After studying the text, the students will be clear about the history and development of rockets. This supplementary reading will enrich the students knowledge of some scientific invention.Task in this module is to prepare a radio programme about the life of a famous scientist. If possible, record your radio programme. If not, write a passage about the famous scientist, and then report it to the whole class.Module file is a summary of this module. It may help the students to know whether they have mastered the main points or not.If time permits, the teacher may have a revision of this module by analyzing this part and consolidate it with some exercises.Teaching Important PointsLearn everyday English such as:breakthrough, nickname, pass and well done.Teaching Difficult PointsThe history and development of rockets.Teaching MethodsPractice and extensive reading.Teaching AidsMultimedia, and a blackboard.Three Dimensional Teaching AimsKnowledge and SkillsTo train the students everyday English. To learn the history and development of rockets. To consolidate their knowledge learned in this module.Process and StrategiesMake the students to learn how to use everyday English.Through the study of rockets, make the students have a general understanding of this invention.Feelings and ValueThrough the study of this module, make sure the students can write a short passage about a famous person, improve their writing skill gradually and make the students learn from the famous scientists.Teaching ProceduresStep 1 Revision (Greet the students as usual.)Check their workbook exercises.Step 2 Everyday EnglishT:Thanks a lot for your wonderful presentation. What we will learn first is everyday English.Look at the words and phrases below, and choose the best explanation.(Show the following on the screen.)1.If you have a breakthrough,it means _.(a)you have solved a difficult problem(b)you have broken something2.A nickname is usually given to you by _.(a)your family or friends(b)someone you dont know well3.If you say Pass in a quiz you mean _.(a)Ive answered the question(b)I cant answer the question4.Well done!Means _!(a)congratulations(b)good luckThe expressions are easy to answer,so dont need to spend too much time on it.Ask the individuals to give answers. Then teach the students to read the words.Suggested answers:Step 3 Cultural cornerT:Next, well give you five minutes to read the whole passage and answer the following questions.(Show the questions on the screen.) 1.How were rockets invented?2.What are they used for today?Five minutes later, encourage the students to share their answers.Suggested answers:1.By accidentwhen people threw bamboo tubes with gunpowder inside into the fire to make explosions and saw that some of them flew into the air.2.They are used to send astronauts into space and in firework displays.T:Good job. There are some other exercise to help you understand the passage better.(Show the questions on the screen.)1.When were rockets probably invented?A.About 2000 years ago.B.In 1232.C.Between the 13th and 15th centuries.D.During the Song Dynasty.2.Who introduced rockets to Europe?A.The Song army.B.The Mongols.C.Wan Hu. D.One Italian scientist.3.Which countries did not do rockets experiment according to the text?A.China.B.England.C.France.Suggested answers:Step 4 TaskT:This part is pair work.Write down your notes from the speaking activity and then prepare a radio programme about the life of a famous scientist.(You can refer to speaking.)You will need to write a radio script about the persons life and work, marking who will say what parts. If possible, record your radio programme.Step 5 Module fileve also learnt the way to talk about numbers.Make sure you can read all kinds of numbers correctly. At the same time, pay attention to the stresses in long words.Everyday English we learned in this module are breakthrough, nickname, pass, and well done.Have a quick look at them and see whether youve mastered the important points. If not,get to know them.Step 6 Summary and homeworkT:Your homework today is to consolidate what we s the end of this class. You are dismissed. The Design of the Writing on the BlackboardModule 4Great ScientistThe fifth periodbreakthrough, nickname, pass, well doneRecord after Teaching_Activities and Research1.Practice more Everyday English.2.Learn some facts about rockets.Reference for TeachingAnswers to Workbook ExercisesGrammar1 1 Who was awarded the World Food Prize in 2004?2 How long has rice been grown in China?3 How was rice production changed by Yuan and why.Stella:I have chosen Marie Curie because she was the greatest woman scientist of the 20th century. She was a brilliant physicist and she was awarded two Nobel Prizes.Teacher:Can you tell us about her life?Stella:She was born in Poland in 1867 and her name was Marie Sklodowski.Marie had an unhappy childhood. Her mother died when she was only nine years old.At that time,Poland was occupied by Russia and Germany and life wasnt easy for Polish people. It was difficult for a woman to go to university so Marie went to France to continue her studies. She became a student at the Sorbonne Institute in Paris. There she met the physicist Pierre Curie and they got married in 1895.Pierre was Professor of Physics at the Sorbonne and he persuaded invisible energy that had been discovered a few years earlier.Marie studied radiation and she discovered two new elements which she called Radium and Polonium.Marie and her husband were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for their research and discoveries. Then in 1906 Pierre died and Marie continued her research alone. She invented the X-ray machine which was used to help to treat injured soldiers during World War I.Marie trained over 100 women to take X-rays in trucks which travelled around the war zone. Then,in 1911,she was awarded her second Nobel Prize, this time for Chemistry, for her work on radioactivity and her invention of the X-ray.Marie died in 1934 of cancer. She had spent her life with radioactive substances and in the end they killed her.Teacher:Thank you,Stella. That was very interesting. Now are there any questions about Marie Curie?15 1 b2 a3 a4 b5 a6 b7 a8 a9 b10 aWriting18 A-2B-5C-1D-3E-4
