climate change:Use less energy. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or moredoing the Earth a favor while also helping our wallets. Not long ago,my wife,PJ,and I tried a new dietnot to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change.Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago,and that the consequences could be severe if we dont keep reducing emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emissions of CO2.We wanted to see how much we could cut back,so we went on a strict diet. The average US household(家庭)produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing common place things like turning on airconditioning or driving cars.Thats more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce? For an answer,I checked with Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers:How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth. In his book,he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting(融化)of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica.“To stay below that point,we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent,”he said.Good advice,I thought.Id opened our bedroom windows to let in the wind.Wed gotten so used to keeping our airconditioning going around the clock.Id almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. Its time for us to change our habits if necessary. 那我们何乐而不为呢?1.Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?A.To take special kinds of food.B.To respond to climate change.C.To lose weight.D.To improve their health. 依据文章第二段中的“not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change”可知,作者这么做的目的是应对一个令人烦恼的气候变化问题。答案:B2.The underlined words“tipping points”most probably refer to“”.A.freezing points B.burning pointsC.melting points D.boiling points解析:猜测词义题。在他的书中,他要读者大幅减少个人温室气体排放量,以免世界来到“引爆的临界点”,下面给出的例子“such as the melting(融化)of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica”,可以判断出C项正确。答案:C3.It can be inferred from the passage that .A.it Starts at HomeB.Changing Our Habits Begins at WorkC.Changing Climate Sounds ReasonableD.Reducing Emissions of CO2 Proves Difficult解析:主旨大意题。 答案:AB (2020湖南雅礼中学模拟)The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness. As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and into public places, some of the countrys most talented artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings.Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms. These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist,Peter Senior who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s.He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art!Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the outpatients waiting area of the Manchester Hospital in 1975.Believed to be Britains first hospital artist,Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates. The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyards. The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness.A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.5.The underlined part“to soften the hard edges of modern buildings”in Paragraph 2 means“”.A.to decorate hospitals with art collectionsB.to make the corners of hospital buildings roundC.to change peoples attitude toward hospitalsD.to replace the old buildings with modern buildings解析:语义理解题。 A6.We learn that Peter Senior is a(n).A.doctor interested in artsB.artist who refuses to hold art exhibitions in hospitalsC.pioneer in introducing art into hospitalsD.artist who owns a great deal of property解析:事实细节题。 C7.According to Peter Senior,we can infer that.A.modern hospitals have a lot of patientsB.art is not appreciated by a large number of people in modern societyC.patients should be encouraged to learn paintingD.artists can not find their positions in modern society解析:推理判断题。第三段第二句提到,Peter Senior感到艺术家在现代社会中已经lost his place,并认为艺术应该让a wider audience来欣赏,由此可推断出,在现代社会,艺术is not appreciated by a large number of people。答案:B8.The passage mainly tells us that.A.patients no longer wholly depend on expensive drugsB.the quality of the environment in hospitals counts in the process of recovery from illnessC.the effect is strikingD.these recent initiatives owe a great deal to Peter Senior解析:主旨大意题。 文章讲述了一个英国现代艺术家把画展摆在了医院大厅里,从而改变了病人就医环境的实例,以及研究的情况“patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.”阐明了“The quality of the environment in hospitals counts in the process of recovery from illness.” Dear Mr. Zhang,We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student. Some are for the idea. In their opinion, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain selfconfidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all. However, others dont hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class and breaking school rules, which may lead to their forming bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies. In my opinion, Id like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together. Shall a senior student take a parttime job in holidays? Dear friends,Here are my points. We students of today have to pay much attention to our lessons and know little of society though its not our fault.A holiday is the best time to make up for that.Taking a parttime job is a good form of social practice. What is learned in books cant have the same deep effect on us as what is learned through experience. In social practice,we can surely make progress in both knowledge and ability.Besides, taking a parttime job,we may get paid more or less to help our family. Thus,I will say a senior school student should take a parttime job in holidays,if possible,of course.
