Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do unethical (不道德的) things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS, 美国国家科学院院刊 )They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving more modest (不豪华的) cars. In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do unethical things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higherclass families were more likely to act dishonestly. According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other peoples feelings. Finally, it simply makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your selfinterest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.Piff pointed out that the findings dont mean that all rich people are untrustworthy (不能信赖的) or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts and values in different ways.1By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to _.Adraw readers attention to the researchBlink wealth with bad behaviorCshow how the saying proves the findingsDdefend rich people who do unethical things2Which of the following is TRUE about the experiments the scientists did, according to the scientist quoted?AMost wealthy people are not trustworthy.BThe findings were not persuasive enough and the scientists will do further experiments.CDrivers of more expensive cars are more likely to break traffic rules.DStudents from poorer families are not as honest as students from richer families.3What makes rich people unethical according to the scientists?athey become more selfishbthey have more desirescthey believe money talksdthey welcome risksAab BabdCbc Dabc4Why did the scientists do the experiments?ATo show how social status affects peoples ethics.BTo show peoples instincts and values in different ways.CTo test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true.DTo show the difference between higherclass people and lowerclass people.5What does the article really want to show us?AMoney is the root of all evil.BThere are more chances for the rich to act unethically.CThe saying is reasonable.DAll rich people are untrustworthy. 开头已经写好,不计入总词数;参考词汇:中医Chinese medicine药材medicinal materials人道的humaneRecently our class have had a heated discussion about whether the practice of extracting bear bile (活熊取胆) should be banned._答 案课时跟踪检测(十八).1. 由“Im not in a hurry.(我不着急。)” 2选Aa sense of humor“幽默感”;a pleasure“一件让人感到愉快的事”。 confuse“使迷惑”;reduce“减少;减缩”;expand“使变大;伸展”。6选D句中home为名词,所以A、B项分别漏了介词to,C项漏了介词at,D项中reach为及物动词,直接跟名词作宾语,directly用作从属连词,相当于as soon as。 otherwise“否则;要不然”;besides“除此之外”;however“然而”。 Im afraid I cant recognize him及回应者所说的Dont worry 可知,应答者认为找到Barry很容易。 cut off“切断;断绝”;come across“(偶然)遇见;碰见”;care about“关心”,均不符合语境。 be content to do sth.“满足于做某事”,符合句意。generous“慷慨的,大方的”;confident“有信心的”;conservative“保守的”。 whisper “低语;小声说”; shout “喊;大声叫;呼叫”; explain “解释”; reply “答复”。 cut up “切碎”; cut in “插话”; cut down “削减;删节”。 catch sb.doing sth. 主语his new movie与call sth. to mind (使想起某事)之间为逻辑上的主动关系,故排除A、D两项;B项作结果状语表示事与愿违或意外的结果,故被排除;现在分词作结果状语表示意料之内的结果,相当于and it called/which called。 up to now常和现在完成时态连用。. 由第三段的“drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks”可知,富人更有可能阻碍其他车辆或是行人,C项正确。 由最后一段的“to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts and values in different ways.” Recently our class have had a heated discussion about whether the practice of extracting bear bile (活熊取胆) should be banned. Some students are in favor of the practice.Firstly, bear bile has long been considered to have magic effects in treating peoples illnesses and nothing can compare with it.Secondly, an advanced way to extract bear bile is being employed, with the bear feeling no pain or strange sensation during the process.Thirdly, as for Chinese medicine, it would be unimaginable without such a valuable raw material as bear bile. However, some others are against it, arguing that the effect of bear bile is not irreplaceable and it has been discovered that over 50 medicinal materials have similar effects. On the other hand, humane as the way adopted to extract bear bile seems to be, it cannot relieve the pain that the bear suffers.Besides, as a living creature, the bear deserves our protection and respect. In my opinion, we human beings shouldnt harm animals to achieve our own benefits.Instead, we should live in harmony with them.
