Unit 4 Wildlife protection 阅读理解A(2018浙江名校协作体高三模拟)“Her grades are fine; Im not worried about that, but she just doesnt seem to love learning any more,” Alices mum said.Shes absolutely right. Id noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when Id been Alices middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet Im torn between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth Im not sure this mother is ready to hear. The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and its our fault. Alices parents, her teachers, society at largewe are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on purpose, we taught her that we dont really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that its better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.【解题导语】本文通过Alice的例子说明了父母、老师和社会有时会扼杀孩子的好奇心和对学习的热爱。1Both the mother and the author have noticed that_AAlice hates to tell them the truthBAlices test scores are not so goodCAlice chooses several subjects to learnDAlice doesnt enjoy studying any moreD解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“but she just doesnt seem to love learning any more”和第二段中的“Id noticed the same thing about her daughter”可知,Alice的妈妈和作者都注意到了Alice 不再喜欢学习。2What does the underlined word “torn” mean in the passage?APained to choose. BGuilty to quit.CTired to manage. DCertain to decide.A解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“between my responsibility.and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth”可知,作者在两者之间很难选择。3. What does the teacher think of the girl? AHer academic perfection results from her character. BShe is a gifted girl with spirits of challenging. CShe is perfect in her character development. DHer academic performance is great.D解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“We taught her to protect.at all costs”可知,Alice的学业表现很好。BDespite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely. One citizen, however,is trying to change this.“You get on the Tube and its completely silent and its weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges(徽章)with the words “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another.“I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,”he says.Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK.,as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.Although Dunne says hes received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea.Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Dont even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson,24,a student from London, agrees.“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work.It doesnt need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says. “People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I dont, but its been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says. So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you?Just make sure to check for a badge first.【解题导语】每年乘坐伦敦地铁的乘客众多,可是人们仍然感到孤独;为此Jonathan Dunne发起了一个旨在鼓励乘客相互交谈的运动,此举引起了世界媒体的关注。尽管如此,人们对此仍有不同的态度。4How did Dunne encourage London passengers to talk with each other?ABy putting up posters on the Tube.BBy advocating his idea on the media.CBy offering passengers special badges.DBy starting a dialogue with passengers.C解析:细节理解题。根据第二段的“who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges(徽章)with the wordsTube chat?”可知,Dunne给乘客们分发写着“Tube chat?”的徽章来鼓励乘客聊天,故C项正确。5How is Dunnes campaign getting along?AIt has caught international attention.BIt has become a worldwide campaign.CMost passengers have refused to accept it.DWilson has made great efforts to promote it.A解析:细节理解题。根据第二段的“Tube chatcampaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK., as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances”可知,Dunne和他的“Tube chat”运动引起了世界各种媒体的关注,故A项正确。6According to Michael Robinson, what should Tube passengers do?AHand in their feedback in time.BWalk up and talk to strangers.CStop using public transport.DEnjoy the peace quietly.D解析:细节理解题。根据第三段的“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesnt need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you”可知,Michael Robinson认为乘伦敦地铁是人们上下班时享受安静的时刻,而不是交谈的时刻,故D项正确。7What can be the best title for the text?ATube Chat or NotBLonely Travel in the London TubeCSilence on the TubeDTube Passengers Wearing BadgesA解析:标题归纳题。 How to Avoid a Boring ConversationWhat excuses should you use to avoid talking to people you dont want to talk to?Here are tips and inoffensive ways to get out of unwanted conversations.Go for a refill(续杯)It is natural for anyone at a party to be excused to get a refill.1._And once you excuse yourself, make a move fast before the person requests you to get a refill for him as well.Pretend bad mood.Cut off the conversation before it starts by saying something along the lines of “Im not in a good mood. Can I talk to you later if you dont mind?” 2._Say it firmly so that people get the message loud and clear.Ask your friend to save you.3_Simply text your friend and ask him or her to come for apparently something important. You will be able to skip a boring chat with a seemingly reasonable excuse.4._You are advised to look away from that person and dont make eye contact,so that you can give powerful hints(暗示)that you find the conversation extremely boring.5._Be sure to tune in to the conversation every now and then so you dont come across as rude.ABehave in an obviously careless way.BJust be sure that the person you are talking to does not offer to accompany you to do so.CDont act too polite in an attempt to draw sympathy.DUse body language to indicate boredom.EYour friend is bound to perform brilliantly in coping with the dull one.FLook elsewhere and pretend that something else has caught your attention.GStuck in an unwanted conversation, how do you get out of it?【解题导语】本文主要介绍了怎样避免无聊的谈话。1B解析:选项B中的so就是指空前的“get a refill”这一行为;同时空后的“make a move fast.as well”与选项B的内容相呼应。2C解析:空后的代词it指代空处前一句中的“Im not in a good mood. Can I talk to you later if you dont mind?”,所以空处及后一句与这一问题有关;同时后一句中的“Say it firmly”与选项C“不要为了获得同情而表现得太礼貌”在内容和语气方面是一致的。 Dear John,Im Li Hua, one of your students from Grade Three._Looking forward to your reply!Yours sincerely,Li HuaOne possible version:Dear_John,Im_Li_Hua,_one_of_your_students_from_Grade_Three.
